CLINTONDALE, N.Y. — Kensington Estate Auctions’ Monday, October 2, online auction will offer many choices for the collector. Genres include paintings, sculptures, rugs, photography, ethnography, animation art, philately, posters, sterling silver and porcelain.
There are those who believe human beings should live life fully because we cannot “take it with us.” Memento Mori/Vanitas reminds us of our mortality combining elements of reality and allegory. Kensington Estate Auctions is offering an early 1900s assemblage Memento Mori/Vanitas tableau of a female head sculpture depicting life and death — a reminder of the brevity of human life.
The category of art includes Nineteenth through midcentury paintings, Eighteenth Century etchings, French Limoges and German painted porcelain plaques, miniature paintings, original Disney and comic book illustrations, urban art and WPA paintings. Highlighting this category is a maritime painting by Thomas H. Willis; Gustave Adolph Wiegand Impressionist landscape; Henry Botkin’s urban painting; miniature paintings depicting Napoleon and Queen Louise of Prussia; and other notables.
In addition, the sale offers British farmyard oils, still life and interior genre paintings. Other artists include Hjalmar Amundsen, J. Edward Homerville Hague, Johnny Friedlaender; LA II (Angel Ortiz) and more.
The Native American category is replete with interest such as David Caricato’s raven sculpture with detachable raven mask, Douwe Blumberg’s bronze equine sculpture, a bronze sculpture: “Shield of the Four Winds,” painting by Daniel Yazzie, Yei rug, Inuit soapstone carvings and pottery.
Offered will be three rare French Art Nouveau posters. One is the poster from the French National de Opera, Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien, 1924, designs by Leon Bakst. The second is Theater de Monte Carlo, illustrated by Alphonse Mucha, 1922; and French Operetta poster for Panurge, illustrated by Charles Leandre, 1913. An American poster of notoriety is of the Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier 1974 “fight of the century.”
In the photography category, there is an Edward Weston/Cole Weston image of Ivanos and Bugatti, signed and stamped; photograph of the boxer Mike Tyson and a special collection of 1930s Harlem (New York) Renaissance enlarged photographs on a custom board. The images are iconic views of street life in Harlem, as are the photographers, such as Hansel Mieth, George Rinhart, Irving Browning and others. The photographic section is highlighted by a collection of original photographs of the Dolly Sisters from the Charles Ritzmann Studios. Also available is the Lord John collection of original autographs of cultural figures and writers of the Twentieth Century, signed next to the corresponding image. Notable images and signatures are from John Updike, Stephen King, Norman Mailer, Ray Bradbury and others. One very unique offering is a 1933 Theodore Van De Ver Velde Sex Efficiency, flicker-medical-book. With 480 cinematographic illustrations the reader flips the pages creating one’s own flip-book movie.
An Egyptian Revival carved and painted female Greco-Roman winged sphinx will be offered, as well as an antique continental gilt bronze lamp with a mounted sterling Ibex; French Art Deco bronze bird sculptures; Black Forest carved whip hook in the form of a rabbit; antique Black Forest carved grouse game-bird shelf bracket; Edwardian equestrian dinner wall gong; Art Deco figural lamp with end-of-day splatter glass; Wavecrest floral plaque; and Rodolfo Dordoni glass vase. The section concludes with an Ugo Zaccagnini ceramic art vase.
Jewelry, sterling silver and accessories from Kensington Estate Auctions is always in demand. Examples include a Tiffany Studio bronze tray (and other Tiffany items); Chinese enamel pendant mirror; butterscotch amber bead necklace; Turkish Ottoman silver repousse wedding mirror; two Rockwell sterling silver Art Deco vases overlaid on black amethyst glass; Victorian silver christening set; silver repousse items; Gorham sterling silver mounted crystal footed compote; Art Deco E. Gubelin Lucerne blue guilloche enamel marble mantel clock; Fishel Nessler owl tassel brooch with dangling French Bull dogs; Claudio Rayes wrought iron side table and much more.
Included in the hand-woven rug section is a Persian saddlebag carpet; rugs of Turkish Ottoman lira currency and Turkish kilim Oushak. Two large Ind-Persian wool carpets are included and a Tibetan dragon rug.
Animation art focuses on Walt Disney, Warner Bros. and other noted comic illustrators. From the cartoonist Carl Barks, there is “In the Care of Ali Baba” for Walt Disney; production cell of Winnie The Pooh’s Most Grand Adventure and Warner Bros Daffy Ducks Quackbusters original drawing. The comic section does not end there. It also includes an original Joe Corroney illustration, “Spike vs. Dracula”; Jeff Schultz and Rich Koslowski original art of Veronica for Archie Publications, including an original surrealistic cartoon-character painting.
