BEVERLY, MASS. — Kaminski Auctions’ October 14 Asian sale will feature the Japanese and Chinese collections of Robert Benedict of Beverly and James S. Dolph of Portsmouth, N.H., with additions from other estates.
These two collections feature an array of delicate Japanese Meiji Satsuma vases, bowls and trays, Nineteenth-Twentieth Century Japanese swords, jade and jadite bracelets, Japanese Meiji period bronze figures, Japanese lacquer boxes, a selection of Japanese tsubas, netsuke collections and snuff boxes and bottles.
Of particular interest is a Meiji period Hirado porcelain puppy with a black ribbon collar, raised paw and open mouth, and a Japanese Meiji period Satsuma vase decorated with noble men in one fan panel and fisherman on a cobalt ground with the seal mark kinkozail on the base.
There is also a Meiji period Japanese model of a Norimono-type palanquin, a covered chair used by higher-class citizens. It is decorated with black and gold lacquer, a floral scrolling with the Shamazu family crest and silver embellishments.
Kaminski’s Asian specialist has amassed an offering of Chinese porcelains and jade from various Connecticut collectors. The top lot is a large and rare Chinese porcelain moon flask; each side has a lotus flower within an outer field of foliate scroll around the Buddhist eight treasures pattern; following that is a Chinese porcelain vase decorated with enameled bats and famille rose peaches with the blue Qing dynasty Guangxu mark on the base. It measures 15½ inches high.
From a Hartford, Conn., collection, there is a molded Chinese porcelain dish with a central dragon covered in cream-white glaze. It bears the Qing Yongzheng mark on the base and is of the period. Another item is a large, yellow-ground grisaille-painted fishbowl, Tinadi Yijiachun, decorated with gilt on the rim and ink-color peony flowers and leaves with the Yongqing Changchun mark on the base. This is only a small selection of the more than 300 lots on offer.
This auction will start at 11 am at the Kaminski Auction Gallery at 117 Elliott Street. Preview hours are October 9-13, 10 am to 5 pm, and Saturday starting at 9 am. The preview is open while the auction is live. For additional information, www.kaminskiauctions.com, 978-927-2223 or 508-367-4311.
