VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. — This October promises a treasure trove for antiques enthusiasts as Blue Box Auction Gallery presents a range of items in its Antique Autumn Showcase. The event is set for a live in-person and simulcast online experience on October 19 at 4 pm Eastern Time.
Topping the list of treasures is an Eighteenth Century slant top red mulberry William and Mary Desk, described as one of the finest Southern antiques ever discovered. Alden Identification Service and CLS Research have both confirmed its unique construction primarily of red mulberry, a wood native to eastern and central North America. The desk, estimated to hail from the period between 1700 and 1710 based on the rings on its side panels, boasts a detailed and ornate interior design. This includes six pigeonholes, eight dovetailed drawers, brass knobs and other intricate architectural details that are a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of its era.
The upcoming auction proudly presents the diverse collection of a retired Cornell professor, a seasoned antiques enthusiast with a notable history in breathing life into historic real estate. His fondness for antiques, ignited by his grandmother who introduced him to timeless artifacts and took him on museum visits, evolved into a lifelong journey. Through this auction, he hopes to inspire a similar ardor in the next generation of collectors.
In addition to the William and Mary desk, the auction will also spotlight a Wilhelm Schimmel carved eagle, showcasing American craftsmanship at its finest. Collectors will also have the opportunity to bid on a Cuban mahogany kneehole block front desk, representing timeless elegance and design. Art enthusiasts can look forward to a William Glackens original oil painting titled “French Landscape,” a representation of European vistas. The auction also brings to the fore a 1775 powder horn and print of The Able Doctor, offering a snapshot into history, and a rare 1870 Harris Co Massasoit Indian weathervane, symbolizing its era.
