PLEASANT VALLEY, N.Y. — Absolute Auctions & Realty is offering more than 100 lots from the 50-year collection of Robert A. Doyle. Doyle wrote two books on straight razor collecting, numerous articles and a column “The Straight Edge” for the American Blade magazine back in the 1980s. At one time he owned more than 2,000 examples of rare and unusual straight razors. He kept the best to be sold last.
The collection includes matched pairs, seven-day sets and portable grooming kits. Most of the razors were handcrafted in Sheffield, England, by master cutlers, and the handles are of carved mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, carved bone, buffalo horn and other Nineteenth Century natural materials.
There are numerous examples from the most prestigious cutlery firm in Sheffield, Joseph Rodgers & Sons, which operated from 1670 to 1970. The company produced only the finest examples of razors and cutlery including oversized exhibition pieces during those 300 years. Many other handcrafted examples from numerous Sheffield cutlery firms are represented in the auction.
The collection features cased sets of straight razors made in France, Germany and America. Every lot sells to the highest bidder, regardless of price.
