PINE BUSH, N.Y. — More than 80 years ago, the SS Normandie caught fire in New York. The ship was determined never to recover by 1946. The ship was noted as the most luxurious ocean liner in history and exhibited the best of the Art Deco period. It carried celebrity passengers such as Cary Grant, Marlene Dietrich, Walt Disney, James Stewart, Ernest Hemingway and Fred Astaire, to name a few. Flannery’s will auction an important piece of history removed from this ship on October 23 at 5 pm.

The Café Grill Night Club and Gathering Place cast iron plaque measuring 6 feet by 10 feet and weighing 1,450 pounds was illustrated with animals by artist Charles Hairon (French, 1880-1962). The item is well documented in Normandie history writings and photographs. The plaque was salvaged from the ship as well as cabin and chapel doors, which will be auctioned off the same evening. These items have been preserved for the last 80 years at a residence in Monroe, N.Y. The house was renovated after the plaque was installed making it almost impossible to remove and required removal of a large window and crane to get it out of the house. The plaque is now on display at the auction house. The piece comes apart into two sections, making it more bearable for transport.

This auction will also include the estate of Dr Robert Rakov, Maybrook, N.Y., with a George Nakashima desk and cabinet, large quantity of estate silver, estate jewelry, fine art and various decorative arts.

A public viewing will be Sunday, October 22, noon to 3pm and sale day noon until sale time. The auction is available for bidding at Flannery’s website or liveauctioneers.com; in addition, the auction room is open to the public during sale.

The Normandie: Charles Hairon (French, 1880-1962) 6ft X 10ft Cast iron plaque from the Grille Room Night Club and Gathering Place on The Normandie Ship. The ship was salvaged in 1946 and this plaque was Shockingly found as a dining room centerpiece where it was installed in Monroe, NY over75+ years ago.
