PLAINVILLE, CONN. — Jewelry from a private collection, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century furniture, clocks and Americana, Nineteenth and Twentieth Century paintings, antique silver, Asian porcelain, Native American, Oriental rugs, ceramics, glass, stamps and other collectibles will cross the block Monday, October 23, at Winter Associates. The material comes from homes in Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
A collection of jewelry passed down through generations of a family with Philadelphia origins will be available, including a pair of hand-fabricated drop earrings with four large diamonds, also an Art Deco diamond tassel necklace measuring 40 inches long and boasting 46.55 carats total weight. Rings include an Edwardian three-stone diamond ring with 1.74 carat center, a diamond and sapphire engagement ring with GIA report on the 1.06 center stone, which has a matching band, a large black opal and diamond halo ring and emerald ring with 7.9mm center stone. An Art Deco sapphire and diamond circle brooch and many other pieces are generously set with diamonds, including bangle and line bracelets, bar pin, buckle brooch, dome ring, etc.
From the same home comes early American furniture and Americana, including a circa 1800 chest-on-chest from the Colchester, Conn., area, a signed 1807 Frederick Wingate tall clock and Nineteenth Century oil portraits, including a child on rocking horse. A 1795 Norwich, Conn., needlework sampler by Mary “Polly” Elliot (1776-1859), worked in silk on linen, features four lines of alphabet and numbers, poem and skilled depiction of house flanked by columns of flowers and trees. Of special note, the sampler was consigned by the current owner through unbroken family descent and full provenance is available to the successful bidder.
Two early Chinese porcelain pieces, from the same home, complement the collection, one a Ming dynasty (1368-1644) 19-inch charger with blue and white lotus decoration, the other a transitional period (1620-1683) blue and white 8-inch-high covered jar from the Hatcher cargo, a famous 1640s shipwreck that was the first of its kind to be recovered in modern times. The newly surfaced collection was offered at Christie’s Amsterdam in several auctions in 1984 and 1985, and the jar retains its original auction label on the base. Other Asian items in the sale come from a Connecticut private collector and include a Meiji period Japanese export silver tea set signed by Konoike, a World War II Japanese-type 95 NCO Shin Gunto in scabbard, ivory okimono of monkey trainer, Meiji lacquer inro, etc.
This sale will be live at the Plainville gallery, 21 Cooke Street, starting at 5:30 pm on October 23.
