LARCHMONT, N.Y. — With the holidays and winter season fast approaching, party outfits and sparkling jewelry are replacing tees and sandals. Clarke Auction Gallery is upping the bling factor with a statement bracelet that’s expected to lead its Sunday, November 12, auction at 10 am. The sale also boasts paintings, gold decorative boxes and much more.
The highlight of the auction will be a signed Van Cleef & Arpels 18K yellow gold woven articulated bracelet having diamond inlaid platinum panels ($40/60,000). In all, the bracelet has 102 round brilliant cut diamonds weighing 13-plus carats. It came out of a Mamaroneck, N.Y., estate, where it was for decades. “It’s truly a beautiful example of Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry and the epitome of quality,” said Clarke’s jewelry specialist Whitney Bria.
Another jewelry standout is an antique 14K yellow gold ring centered by a prong-set faceted emerald flanked by two Old European cut diamonds ($4/6,000). Thought to possibly be Colombian, the emerald was being evaluated by GIA at press time. “The most important factor of a colored stone is the color, and the second most important factor is the country of origin so we are getting an emerald origin report,” Bria explained.
The auction also boasts a good selection of diamonds and other precious stones, including a 14K yellow gold ring centered by a 1.91-carat round brilliant cut diamond ring ($3/5,000) and a platinum, diamond and emerald bracelet ($2/3,000).
Fine art is also prominently here with paintings spanning the decades, styles and the world. An expected highlight is an abstracted oil on paper by Georges Mathieu (French, 1921-2012) titled “M32,” and dated to 1954. The signed work, estimated at $20/30,000, retains labels from the Kootz Gallery in New York and the Art Lending Service of the Museum of Modern Art.
“We are really pleased to be handling the George Mathieu as it comes directly by descent from the purchaser at the museum, said Clarke’s fine art specialist Peter Schweller.
Coming out of a New Rochelle estate are several pen and ink illustrations from famed caricature artist Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003), known for his show business drawings. This collection will be led by a drawing from the movie, The Wizard of Oz, with actors Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Judy Garland and Jack Haley ($20/30,000), along with a drawing from Some Like It Hot, starring Tony Curtis, Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemon ($10/15,000). “The Al Hirschfeld works are probably some of the most important works to come to the market for some time,” Schweller said.
He was equally excited to see a strong representation of artworks by African American artists, including a tremendous range of works by Vincent DaCoata Smith (1921-2003). In his lifetime, Brooklyn-born Vincent D. Smith did not receive his due, but interest in this pioneering African American artist has continued to grow since his passing two decades ago. Nine paintings by Smith will cross the block, led by “Jazz Musicians,” a 1964 oil on Masonite ($6/9,000).
The styles of artwork on offer are diverse and range from a rare abstract lithograph by Abraham Walkowitz (Russian/American, 1878-1965), circa 1927, to a large expressive oil on canvas, “Master and Pupil,” by William Gropper (1897-1977). Both are estimated at $6/9,000 each.
Four signed oil on canvas paintings by Singapore-born artist Tan Choh Tee (b 1942) will also cross the block: “Tonhang,” 1982, and “Street Wayang,” 1978, both estimated at $6/9,000; “Morning Market Singapore,” a 1979 oil on canvas ($3,5,000), and “Singapore River,” 1982 ($3/5,000).
Gold also will be front and center in this sale, led by two 18K yellow gold vanity boxes monogrammed Tiffany & Co. First across the block is a rectangular vanity box with a hinged lid ($11/13,000), measuring about 5-1/3 by 1¾ inches and 1 inch tall. The box will be followed by a lidded circular example ($10/12,000) with a nearly 4-inch diameter and standing just over 2 inches tall. Another Tiffany lot shining bright is a set of six 18K yellow gold spoons ($5/7,000) with personal inscriptions on the underside of each spoon and like the vanity boxes above, is stamped “Tiffany & Co. Makers 18kt. Gold M.”
The boxes came out of the same estate as the Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet so evidently the collector had an eye for gold. “These are excellent examples of early Twentieth Century Tiffany and who doesn’t need 18K gold vanity items?” Bria said.
Rounding out the auction are several pieces of American furniture by noted Midcentury Modern designers. A rare Vladimir Kagan (1927-2016) model executive desk with gilt metal base ($3/5,000) measures 29 by 83 by 38 inches, while a 1960s pair of “Etruscan” occasional tables by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne ($3/5,000) is made of etched, patinated and polychromed bronze and pewter. The tables stand 18 inches tall and have an equal diameter.
