A group of rare editions features Robert Rauschenberg’s “Charter” (Union). Handmade by the artist in 1974 while in residency in India, this edition of 15 is constructed from mud, paper pulp and curry powder. Other rare editions include works by Francis Bacon, Donald Judd, Niki de Saint Phalle and Richard Serra. French Art Deco and Modern design includes a secretaire by Rene Herbst, armchairs by Emile Ruhlmann, a daybed by Eric Chambert, and pieces by Line Vautrin, Eugene Schone, Vladimir Kagan and Robsjohn-Gibbings for Saridis. A collection of Herman Miller furniture includes a large George Nelson CSS wall system, assorted Thin Edge cabinets and a pair of Eames loungers. Art Deco and modern lighting include a pair of Sabino chandeliers, and works by Albert Cheuret and Michel Zadounaisky. The day concludes with a collection of hand-built model race cars.
Day 2 focuses on Asian, American and British art and antiques. Chinese porcelains, jades and bronzes from 885 Park Avenue join 25 scroll paintings spanning the Ming era to contemporary from a private New York City collection. Works of American art feature a Mary Cassatt gouache, oils by Antonio Jacobsen, Philip Reisma and Raphael Soyer, a Reginald Marsh watercolor and a rare, early Rockwell Kent woodblock. American Illustration art from the Charles Sigety estate includes paintings by Howard Chandler Christy and Abe Hirschfeld. Period British George III and Regency furniture comes from several distinguished collections, including a desk signed Gillows from 1 Sutton Place and a George III giltwood console with Blue John top from the Breakers, Florida.
Day 3 features continental art and antiques, antiquities and rare books, including Art Nouveau glass and lighting from the collection of Dr Thomas Chua. Rare examples of Emile Galle, Daum and Muller Freres are shown with sculpture by Jean Lambert-Rucki, Francois Pompon and Agathon Leonard. An Edouard Vuillard pastel, a study for the portrait of Madame Lucien Sauphar, comes with full provenance and inclusion in the upcoming revised catalogue raisonné. Other art highlights include a Felix Ziem oil, a group of French Fifteenth Century painted Book of Hours manuscript leaves and Old Masters engravings by Duerer, Lucas Cranach and Rembrandt.
Deaccessioned works benefiting the Newark Museum of Art include signed period Louis XVI furniture and antique continental outdoor statuary and architectural objects.
