PROVINCETOWN, MASS. — Bakker Auctions will conduct its holiday live online fine arts auction on Saturday, November 25, starting at 1 pm.
Included in the sale are works by national and international artists of significance, including two 1940 prints by Lyonel Feininger, “Excursion” and “Spire of Gelmeroda” ($1/1,500 each). A large masterwork by Maurice Sterne, “Pear Still Life” ($2/3,000), anchors the sale with its rich harvest tones. Sterne, one of the first artists to discover and work in Bali, became the first American to have a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 1933, the year before Edward Hopper. Multiple selections of block prints by Varujan Boghosian, whose exhibition list also included MoMA, highlight the collection of works on paper in the auction.
Just in time for the gift giving season, the sale includes a selection of works by contemporary Cape and Provincetown artists. Three artists from the Packard family are represented in the sale, including Anne Packard with two smalls, “Low Tide” ($3/5,000) and “Red Dory” ($3/5,000), and her two daughters, Cynthia and Leslie, each with two pieces. Cynthia’s large “Table Still Life with Chair” ($8/12,000) and Leslie’s “Nude at Table” ($1,5/2,000) both hint at their mother’s artistic influence.
Other contemporary paintings in the sale include four John Dowd works, each capturing unique Cape views in his unique style. “Wolf Moon” ($3/5,000) and “Blue Shutters” ($3/5,000) express Dowd’s passion for the waning hours of the day. Other popular local artists include Steve Bowersock, Larry Collins, Chet Jones, Hilda Neily and T.J. Walton.
Significant historical pieces include “Kewpie,” a 1913 oil by Jane Jarvis Mumford depicting the now iconic doll that originated and came on the market the year before in 1912 ($800-$1,200).
Multiple offerings by Alvin Ross for whom the new wing of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum is named, include the 1939 painting, “Chrysanthemum Still Life” ($2/3,000), a piece he produced at the age of 19. Pauline Palmer’s impeccable work, “Provincetown” ($3/5,000) clearly shows why, upon her death in 1938, The New York Times called her “one of the leading women painters in America.” Other historical artists include Wharton Esherick, Susan Flint, Karl Knaths, Samuel Oppenheim, Aiden Lassell Ripley, Agnes Weinrich, Nancy Whorf and George Yater.
