MOUNT CRAWFORD, VA. — Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates will conduct its 45th Semi-Annual Premier Americana auction November 30–December 2. The three-day event features consignments from estates and collections across the United States as well as important objects from several institutional deaccessions. Overall, with nearly 1,300 lots of fresh-to-the-market material to be sold over the weekend, the sale is sure to generate plenty of excitement within the collecting community.
Day 1, beginning at 9 am EST on Thursday, November 30, will feature property from the Leo Greiner collection, Roseburg, Ore.; the private collection of Julie Roe, Alexandria, Va.; a New York City private collection; the collection of Ken Depew, Ft. Myer’s, Fla.; plus others. The day’s offerings will include a selection of colored flint; collection of Pittsburgh area wares, including rare pattern- and pillar-molded; free-blown and blown-molded wares, many in rare colors; a wide assortment of toy tumblers, tasters and condiment articles; a selection of whale oil lighting; cup plates, salts and other pressed lacy; early cut glass; plus more. Highlights include an important pair of opaque white pillar-molded quart bar decanters with applied deep amethyst lip and neck ring; a rare pair of pressed loop / leaf vases in deep violet blue; and a pair of pressed hexagonal candlesticks in yellow citron and fiery opalescent color.
Day 2, beginning at 9 am EST on Friday, December 1, will feature property from the Layton collection, Paris, Ky.; a New York City private collection; the estate of David Lee Fannon, Amissville, Va.; a Wisconsin collection; the estate of Charlie Casper, Pittsboro, N.C.; the collection of Ken Depew, items deaccessioned by the Wilton House Museum, Richmond, Va., to benefit collections care, preservations and future acquisitions; plus others. The weekend’s offerings will include a selection of free-blown glass wares, including rare trumpet vases; Marbrie loop articles, including witch balls and flasks; utilitarian wares, such as milk pans and bowls; a selection of rare Shenandoah Valley stoneware and other American folk pottery; rare antiquarian books and other printed articles; Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century silver, including Southern coin and English sterling; Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century ceramics, including transfer-printed Staffordshire, English pearlware and Chinese export porcelain.
Highlights for Day 2 include a pair of American free-blown thistle-form vases in opaque white with deep cobalt blue highlights; an unusual Texarkana Pottery-attributed salt-glazed stoneware figural fish pitcher; and a Thomas Wolfe signed first edition volume Of Time and the River.
Day 3, beginning at 9 am EST on Saturday, December 2, will feature property from the private collection of George Huffman, Carmel, Ind.; the Layton collection; the estate of David Lee Fannon; a Wisconsin collection; the estate of Charlie Casper, Pittsboro, N.C.; items deaccessioned by the Wilton House Museum, the Mount Vernon Ladies Association, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the Valentine Museum, Richmond, Va., to benefit collections care, preservations and future acquisitions; plus others. The weekend’s offerings will include a selection of rare Virginia and other Southern material, including Shenandoah Valley stoneware and other folk pottery; rare fraktur and a selection of folk art; a selection of decoys and folk art carvings from a private collection; Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century formal and country furniture, including several examples from Boston and Philadelphia, as well as important Virginia and Southern pieces.
Also included is Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century photography and related material; American fine and decorative art; Civil War, firearms and other historical material, including a selection of early American flags and other political textiles. Highlights for the day include a Nineteenth Century American carved and painted tobacco / cigar store trade figure attributed to Thomas Brooks (1828-1895) of New York City; a rare and important 1860 “Wigwam” Republican Convention Kentucky state delegation flag; a Philadelphia Chippendale carved walnut dressing table; and a William Gibian (Onancock, Va.) carved and painted preening marbled godwit shorebird.
