MARION, MASS. — With something for everyone, Marion Antique Auctions on Sunday, December 3, will offer 600 lots drawn from local estates, including the estate of George Morgan of Chilmark, Martha’s Vineyard and Worcester, Mass., the fine art collection of the late Leonard Rebello of Fall River, the estate of James Barton of New Bedford, including his automobilia collection, as well as his antique cars, and numerous other items from prominent southeastern Massachusetts estates, Rhode Island and Florida estates.
This diverse sale has offerings in numerous collecting categories. The furniture category includes an Eighteenth Century Italian overmantel mirror with carved winged angels from the Morgan estate on Martha’s Vineyard. George Morgan was an actor and a collector of eclectic antiquities. Frank McNamee was called to do the estate appraisal of the Morgan estate, and upon arrival at the MV estate, found a collection of important objects, many of which are in this auction.
From a Florida estate comes an Eighteenth Century Connecticut cherry wood highboy, and from an attic in Somerset, Mass., there is an Eighteenth Century tiger maple chest of drawers in old finish. From the Taradash collection comes an Eighteenth Century William and Mary five-drawer chest purchased many years ago by collector Bernie Taradash from George Considine Antiques of Dartmouth, Mass.
A selection of Shaker chairs and rockers are included in this sale. Found in the attic of the New Bedford estate of James Barton was an American Renaissance Revival credenza attributed to Pottier & Stymus. It is rosewood with tulipwood, maple and marquetry inlay. From the estate of a deceased Florida collector comes a three-piece John Jelliff parlor set, circa 1875, made of walnut with carved female figureheads terminating at the arms. It has new, historically appropriate upholstery. Midcentury furniture is represented by a pair of Charles Eames for Herman Miller, black leather and polished aluminum swivel chairs. Also, in this category, there are four Hans Wagner wishbone armchairs and a Frank Lloyd Wright for Henredon Taliesin coffee table, circa 1955.
This sale includes numerous rare clocks, including an Ithaca No. 6 hanging library clock, a Seth Thomas calendar clock with rosewood case, an Ithaca No. 5 hanging Belgrade calendar clock, a Foster Campos Willard Patent banjo clock, as well as several other banjo clocks. From a South Dartmouth clock collector comes a rare Kelly & Sheppard shelf clock made in New Bedford in the early Nineteenth Century. Potentially the most valuable clock in this auction is a Walter Durfee tall case grandfather clock, carved mahogany case with spiral turned posts, brass and silver dial, time and strike movement, with a second hand. The clock offerings are also highlighted by a Nineteenth Century Louis XVI-style boulle work bracket clock with gilt bronze trim.
Bronzes in the sale are led by two circa 1955 kneeling nude female figures by Leo Mole, a Canadian and Ukrainian artist. Also on offer are three French Nineteenth Century automatons, including a jester playing an instrument by Leopold Lambert, circa 1890; a girl knitting by Tete Jumeau; and a clown blowing bubbles. The toy category offers a collection of Hurley cast iron motorcycles as well as a Buddy L pressed steel fire truck and coal truck.
There is a collection of early silver, which comes from the estate of William Savery of South Carver, Mass., highlighted by a coin silver presentation pitcher, dated 1868 with a Greek key design and a figure of a man’s head on the handle. There is a coin silver pitcher found in the Barton estate attic by Ball, Tompkins & Black, New York.
A collection of scrimshaw-era whaling canes is led by a carved spiral twist whalebone cane, mid-Nineteenth Century, deaccessioned by the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
The sale has a collection of Chinese export porcelain from the Taradash family of Tiverton, R.I., including Canton, Rose Medallion punch bowls and covered vegetable dishes, plus historic transferware.
The paintings category is led by a little gem by James Edward Buttersworth depicting racing yachts off Sandy Hook, N.Y. Potentially one of the most valuable paintings in the sale is an oil on canvas by German artist Adolf Schreyer depicting Arab riders on horseback in a carved and gilded frame, consigned by an old Boston family. There is a collection of Fall River School still life and landscape paintings, some by Abbie Zuill, George A. Hays, Mary Macomber, Bryant Chapin and others. Fairhaven artist Lemuel D. Eldred is well represented with works from the Barton estate.
There is a large oil on canvas depicting an early view of Fairhaven waterfront with the Unitarian church and town hall in the distance, as well as a watercolor, possibly off the coast of Grand Manan.
One of the finest Anthony Thieme paintings that Marion Auctions has handled is included in this sale. It is a large oil on canvas depicting a colorful courtyard in Mallorca, Spain, with a figure in an open doorway. This piece comes with its original purchase receipt dated December 3, 1954, from Grand Central Art Galleries.
The viewing will be conducted at Marion’s auction gallery at 13 Atlantis Drive, on Thursday, November 30 and Friday and Saturday, December 1-2, 10 am to 5 pm. For more information, www.marionantiqueauctions.com or 508-498-7136.
