KANSAS CITY, MO. — On December 2, the Campanella collection, comprising 113 original works by Thomas Hart Benton, will be open for bidding, offered by Circle Auction. The collection was originally assembled by long-time Benton friend and artist Vincent Campanella. Authenticated by Benton author and scholar Dr Henry Adams, this collection is a key record of Benton’s artistic development.
In the summer of 2007, Adams was invited to examine a significant trove of original Benton artworks, the Campanella collection. Adams noted that this collection is the largest assembly of Benton drawings and studies outside of the Benton Trust. Spanning nearly six decades, from 1917 to Benton’s final year, the collection offers a detailed view of his evolving artistry.
Notable for its variety, the sketches and paintings in the Campanella collection encapsulate Benton’s stylistic journey. Included are his early experiments with Synchronism and progression to the Regionalist style that later defined his work.
The collection’s breadth across different subjects and styles sets it apart from other Benton compilations, like the one at the University of Indiana, providing a comprehensive overview of his stylistic evolution.
A significant aspect of the collection’s history is the relationship between Benton and Vincent Campanella, a fellow artist and collector. Their association, beginning in 1949 in Kansas City, endured through various phases, including collaboration and disagreement. This background adds depth to the collection, reflecting the personal and professional dynamics of the two artists.
Thomas Hart Benton’s sudden passing in 1975 left his mural, “The Sources of Country Music,” unfinished. Rita Benton, his widow, requested Campanella to complete the mural. This collaboration likely contributed to the growth of the Campanella collection.
Adams’ essay accompanying the collection explores the complex relationship between Benton and Campanella. It provides context to their interactions, artistic endeavors in Kansas City and the collection’s significance. This essay, an important document for understanding the collection, will be available to winning bidders.
The collection is currently cataloged online for pre-bidding, with final bidding starting at 10 am CST on December 2. An open house preview is planned for late November, allowing interested parties to view the collection in person.
This auction presents an opportunity to acquire works from a significant period in American art history, showcasing Thomas Hart Benton’s journey as an artist. The Campanella collection not only offers a window into Benton’s creative process but also reflects the historical and personal context of his work.
