NEW YORK CITY — La Belle Epoque Auction House is presenting its holiday season multi-estates auction at the firm’s 7,000-square-foot space at 71 8th Avenue on the border of the Meatpacking District and the West Village. The auction, being conducted live in-person, begins on Saturday, December 2, at 11 am and will also be online through LaBelleEpoque.com, LiveAuctioneers, Invaluable and Bidsquare.
Taking the spotlight in this sale will be an eclectic selection of contemporary art. There will also be an offering of art glass from Baccarat, Lalique and Carl Radke, along with German and French ceramics and collectible works by John Stobart and Joseph Hirsch, sterling silver articles, Christmas memorabilia from the 1930s and collectible baseball cards from the 1950s.
Highlighting the art arena will be “Superman” by Andy Warhol, sketch on Arches paper, stamped on back twice with authentication by Frederick Hughes, circa 1989, and again in 2001 by the estate of Andy Warhol ($1/100,000) and a “Memoriam to Basquiat” attributed to Keith Haring (1958-1990). The acrylic on canvas is in the style of Basquiat, signed on bottom mid-right “K. Haring 89” ($1/100,000).
Also notable are a “Green Tile” by Robert Greene (American, b 1953), signed on back of aluminum plate. ($600/800), “The Homosexual Neurosis” (Pink) by Hernan Bas, circa 2013, edition of 25 ($1/2,000). Bas makes paintings that are tinged with nihilist romanticism and influenced by the writings of Joris Karl-Huysmans and Oscar Wilde. “Moonscape I,” circa 1978, by Peter Max, an original serigraph edition 82/150, is estimated $800-$1,200. And a Betty Tompkins (b 1945) “Schmutz #,” 2013, pencil on paper is an example of the artist’s pioneering force in the development of feminist art ($500/800).
Others include “Empire State Building” (Connie Hayes, circa 2000), an oil on paper of the New York City skyline ($1/2,000). Also listed in this sale are two other works by Hayes, “Shadow Cubes #5” and “San Remo #1,” and a Cab Calloway photograph by Carl Van Vechten, 1933 ($800-$1,000).
Some rare historical documents are also getting attention, including a note from President William Henry Harrison, circa 1795. The notation discusses the transfer of 9 pounds of corn and beef. Harrison (1773-1841), an American military officer and politician, was the ninth president of the United States (1841), the oldest president to be elected at the time. On his 32nd day, he became the first to die in office, serving the shortest tenure in US presidential history ($1/1,500).
Also featured is a rare set of Public Illumination magazine, issues 1-57, complete with duplicated of issues 41, 42, 43, 48, 51, 52 and 54. Public Illumination began in 1979 as an underground art scene publication with a different theme every issue. Public Illumination is thought to be one of the longest running “zines” in publication. With anonymous artist submissions, many prominent illustrators and writers adopted a moniker. One issue of note exhibits what is considered to be the first known publication of Keith Haring work. Issue 13’s centerfold illustrated by Haring’s moniker “Kip Herring” ($800-$1,000).
Highlights in the decorative items arena are an Art Deco bronze tile from the Century Central Park, Provenance: ex collection of Cornelius “Connie” Dugan, resident manager of the Century ($400/600), and a Sotheby’s Harriman Judd Collection Doulton vase by Joan Honey ($800-$1,000).
