Looking for that one of a kind gift for the holidays or thinking that you really ought to treat yourself as you have been especially good this year. Regardless of whether either statement is true or not, we have a festive hall decked with trees and full of books and ephemera from which you can choose.
For the collector whose tastes are out of the ordinary, consider a 34-volume set in 3/4 leather of the “Works of Rafael Sabatini.” The 1st volume is signed by Sabatini and includes a handwritten manuscript page from one of this author’s many works. If interested in early submarine tech no logy then there is a 1916 Restricted operating manual issued by Electric Boat entitled, “Confidential Description of the Holland Type Submarine Torpedo Boat together with notes on care and operations built by the Electric Boat Co..” For pottery enthusiasts there is the 1914 limited edition by Falke of ” Die Majolikasammlung Alfred Pringsheim in Munchen.”
Not so much into the esoteric but a collector of signed fiction then consider the following signed, 1st editions in dustjackets: Shaw (1948) “The Young Lions,” Clancy (1987) “Patriot Games,” Conroy (1986) “Prince of Tides,” and Updike (1981) “Rabbit is Rich.” Other volumes meriting interest include Dorothy Parker’s (1933) “After Such Pleasures,” and (1936) “Not So Deep As A Well,” Emerson’s (aka Lawrence Block, 1999, signed) “Threesome,” Sabatini’s (no date, signed) “The Life of Cesare Borgia,” and James Joyce’s (1930) “Ulysses,” The 11th and final printing by Shakespeare & Co. of Paris issued in May 1930 and bound in 1/2 leather.
For history buffs there is a 1st edition of Drayton’s (1855) “Personal Memoir of Daniel Drayton for 4 Years and 4 Months A Prisoner (for Charity’s Sake) in Washington Jail including a Narrative of the Voyage and Capture of the Schooner Pearl,” and an ex. library copy of Minot’s (1810) “History of the Insurrections in Massachusetts and the Rebellion.”
For those who appreciate art and design, there are several lots of Bruce Webber’s photography, a limited signed edition of Rockwell Kent’s (1937) “Later Bookplates & Marks of Rockwell Kent,” a signed copy of Schaldach (1945) “Carl Rungius Big Game Painter 50 Years with Brush and Rifle,” and Gage’s (1980) “Japanese Painted Porcelain Modern Masterpieces in Overglazed Enamel.”
Lastly, as this time of year does lend itself to introspection, we should mention that we have a signed copy of Miller’s “Death of a Salesman,” a signed limited edition of “Cinderella,” illustrated by Rackham (for those feeling guilty about their treatment of a stepsister), and a most intriguing September 28th, 1839 handwritten pledge made at 9 p.m. at the Atlantic Hotel in Hartford, CT that the signer will live a Christian life.
