SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. — More than 60 original Maynard Dixon works of art from the A.P. Hays collection lead the Scottsdale Art Auction’s annual live auction happening April 11-12 at Legacy Gallery in Old Town Scottsdale.
At nearly 500 lots, the sale is the biggest yet for the regional auction house and will take place over two days in early April. The auction will begin Friday, April 11, with 178 lots and then on Saturday, April 12, the 60 works from the Hays collection will hit the auction block at 10 am followed by the remaining lots at 1 pm.
Abram Packer Hays, Jr, known around the Scottsdale art scene as Abe Hays, is a prolific collector of Western art, artifacts and historic items and opened Arizona West Galleries in Scottsdale in 1976. He previously donated his collection of historic western material to Western Sprit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, where he served on the executive committee. Hays has loaned and assisted more than 50 museums in 14 states as well as Canada with both art and artifacts from his collection. He also maintains collections of other prominent Western artists, including Carl Oscar Borg (1879-1947), Gunnar Windforss (1879-1934), Will James (1892-1942) and Lon Megargee (1893-1960).
Hays’ Dixon collection includes master oil paintings, drawings, watercolor and studies, many from Dixon’s travels in and around the Arizona area and some before Arizona even became a state.
Notable works in the Dixon collection include “Walls of Walpi” ($75/125,000); “Desert Rocks No. 2/Camelback Mountain” ($75/125,000); “Barn and Poplars” ($60/90,000); and “Oasis” ($50/75,000). The Camelback Mountain landscape is a rare Dixon done in the Phoenix area and depicts the northwestern corner of the local landmark with its steep cliff faces and often unnoticed rocky precipices. The painting is dated 1925.
As in similar years, the auction boasts highly sought-after, historic and contemporary Western, American, wildlife and sporting art with a number of highlights, especially from members of the Taos Society of Artists.
Oscar Berninghaus (1874-1952) is represented by an oil titled “The Edge of the Foothills” (24¼ by 30¼ inches). Berninghaus moved to Taos permanently in 1925 but was one of the original members of the Taos Society of Artists when it was created in 1914. “The Edge of the Foothills” is an everyday scene from Taos at that time. It depicts several members of the Taos pueblo resting their horses in the shade while the magnificent peaks of Taos Mountain hold court in the background. The figures are large and in the foreground of the painting, two very desirable elements when it comes to paintings by Berninghaus ($175/275,000).
Other important paintings by members of the Taos Society of Artists include Eanger Irving Couse, “Offering to the Great Spirit” ($400/600,000); Joseph Henry Sharp, “Wind River Country-Wyo” ($150/250,000); Joseph Henry Sharp, “Cheyenne Camp” ($175/275,000); and a Sharp figurative piece titled “Governor’s Son” ($60/90,000).
Also on the historic lots, the auction will bring several works by Western artist Charlie Russell to market, including “Center Fire Man on a Bronc” ($135/185,000) and “Navajo Wild Horse Hunters” ($300/500,000).
Other major historic lots include a Thomas Moran oil of the Grand Canyon, “On the Hance Trail-Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, Arizona” ($750,000-$1 million) and Henry Farny’s “Nomads” ($900,000-$1.2 million).
Contemporary offerings include major works from artists such as Mark Maggiori, Logan Hagege, Thomas Blackshear, John Coleman, Eric Bowman, William Acheff, Martin Grelle and Kyle Polzin.
Two paintings by Maggiori will surely be favored by collectors as they depict the cloudy skies and riders on horseback that Maggiori has become so known for. “Mariposa Afterglow” $50/75,000) depicts a lone rider from the Taos pueblo in white garments on top a white horse with a glorious New Mexican sunset in the background. “Entering Utah” ($50/75,000) depicts a covered wagon guarded by cowboys on horseback traversing through the canyonlands.
The auction also brings to market G. Harvey’s painting, “The American Dream” ($250/350,000), which depicts the nation’s capital at sunset with a crowd of Victorian citizens in the foreground The painting is on the cover of the Harvey book and comes from the artist’s estate. In 1992, Harvey lent the painting to the Department of State’s Art in Embassies program and Robert Strauss, the US Ambassador to Russia, hung it in his office. It has also hung at the Smithsonian and the Rotunda of the nation’s Capitol.
Ed Mell, one of Arizona’s most popular artists, who passed last year, is also well-represented in this year’s auction. Mell paintings in this year’s sale include “Western Gap I” ($28/38,000); “Eye of the Storm” ($35/45,000) and “Clouds and Cacti” ($25/35,0000). There will also be a 14-inch version of Mell’s iconic sculpture, “Jack Knife” ($15/25,000), which graces the roundabout on Main Street in Old Town Scottsdale.
Contemporary Indigenous art will be well-represented, with major pieces from artists such as Fritz Scholder, Kevin Redstar, Earl Biss, John Nieto and Allan Houser. Major Scholder paintings include “Indians and Persian Rug” ($100/150,000) and “Buffalo Back” ($80/120,000).
