Helen Adair’s family’s background represents the American Dream in which they made their fortune in real estate, business and then the market. The family traveled the world, collecting many fine things. The Delhi House was built in 1861 and housed all the items that bidders will have the opportunity to purchase. This house originally had 168 acres with it, which over time was sold off, as were many of their properties.
American writer James Fenimore Cooper and one or two other families were among the area’s residents. Both Abijah and Maria’s father, William, purchased considerable land, first along Oaks Creek and then into the Oneonta area (then still part of Unadilla).
There are many different periods of furniture, including heavily carved oak furniture, to include a dining room set and server, possibly by R.J. Horner, ornate carved bedroom dressers, an Arts and Crafts desk, Victorian and Empire parlor pieces, marble top furniture, early large tiger maple four-poster bed and an ornate Chinese sewing table with implements. There are sterling silver items; jewelry pieces; lighting items to include a signed Cornelius Sinumbra astral lamp with wheel-cut shade; ceramics including an antique Tiffany & Company porcelain vase; textiles to include Victorian clothing, lace items, etc., and early Nineteenth Century American samplers (Wood family); holiday decorations and ephemera to include early photo albums and 1850-70s papers related to Dr Calvin Howard and Mrs E.P. Howard of Delhi, N.Y., there are books, including Civil War-related material..
Successful bidders may pick up their items on January 22 and 23 if paid for or call for an appointment.
The firm’s next sale will consist of two large collections of militaria dating back to the Revolutionary War through World War II, art, sports-related items, many autographed items, and items related to Syracuse University and the sport of golf. For information, 518-766-3865 or 518-463-8542.
