WEST HURLEY, N.Y. — On Saturday, February 10, at 11 am, JMW Auction will sell the complete gallery and shop contents of abstract metals sculptor Greg Mayo. Included will be approximately 60 mixed metals abstract sculptures ranging in size from 24 inches to more than 18 feet. Mayo started with Artweld Studio & Gallery in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in the early 1990s, then relocating to the Hudson Valley and opening Wheelhouse 28. The sale will also include his complete fabrication shop, his Porsche Cayenne, Suzuki Boulevard motorcycle, partial projects and decorative metal objects.
According to a small biography recently written by his sister, “Self-taught artist extraordinaire Glen Mayo had a career that spanned more than 35 years. Glen’s early years were spent in New York City, but he lived and worked for more than two decades in south Florida where he developed and created an impressive body of work. The final years of his life, Glen set out to embody all that nature had to offer in the Hudson Valley region. He did not plan for illness to strike in the summer of 2023, but he will be forever remembered for his original and timeless metalworks, architecturally structured for beauty, poise and purpose. He was a relentless sculptor and furniture maker designing and fabricating pieces not simply to satisfy commissions, but also to fulfill his own passion.
“Driven tirelessly to create piece after piece (regardless of how tall or how small), Glen stopped at nothing in order to bring something new into this world. It is no wonder that the number of his creations amassed in the thousands. He worked with the utmost fervor up until the days he no longer could. His breathtaking abstract and figurative metalwork installations have been published in highly regarded design forum magazines, many of which are still standing on vast private properties across this country’s beautiful landscape. Glen’s creations are made in shiny, tooled, finished stainless steel; however, you can find other varieties in wood, stone and glass. The artist’s works have been exhibited at Art Basel Miami as well as public spaces and in modern hotels such as the Four Seasons in Miami.
“A vast majority of his works can be enjoyed on his Instagram page @glenmayosculpture. He was a constant, self-taught guitarist and poet at best. He was a father, brother, uncle and true friend to many. Some of his last words of wisdom he shared on his site: ‘Every picture is a story. Embrace all the beauty and don’t postpone joy.’”
