MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. — Kaminski Auctions presents selected items from the 1920s historic estate known as “Wayside” in Bedford Corners, Mount Kisco, in its estates auction on Sunday, February 18, at 11 am.
Wayside was originally the home of Edwin S. Bayer and Laura Kayser Bayer of New York City and Paris. The Bayers were important art collectors of their time, and two significant sales of their art collection are noted in the Frick Museum archives in New York City; the first was at the Galerie Charpentier in 1933; and Galerie Charpentier was an auction gallery of historical and contemporary art in Paris, located at 76, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré.
The second sale was at Sotheby Parke Benet in 1961, upon Laura Bayers’ death, Edwin S. Bayer died in 1929, and Laura Kayser Bayer moved to Paris, later married Count Antoine e Sala in 1931, and sold Wayside to Joseph and Bessie Gerber Glass.
The Glasses purchased Wayside with many of the furnishings. The original property included the main house and many outbuildings, including stables, a poultry house, a dairy barn, a creamery, a bull house and greenhouses. During World War II, Wayside was primarily a self-sustaining property with various crops grown and extensive grape arbors. When purchased by the Glasses, the property stretched from McLain Street to Route 172 and down to Route 117, with specific parcels excepted. The original main house is at 118 McLain Street, Bedford.
Items in the auction include a metal suit of armor with a sword, the contents of a wine cellar with more than 300 bottles, a large American Flyer and LGB train set and music equipment from a professional music studio, including a Farfisa Professional Duo organ. There is also a Ford 1900 tractor for sale.
Decorative arts highlights include a Federal-style giltwood mirror, a set of antique French brass mirrored sconces, a pair of Chinese carved stone foo dogs, a pair of hand-painted chinoiserie gold beveled glass mirrors, signed Cardiff 1984 and mercury and 1920s Jansen lamps.
