CLINTONDALE, N.Y. — Kensington Estate Auction’s Monday, February 26, online auction will provide a diverse array of time-honored and graffiti art with so much in between. Genres include American, European and Haitian paintings, lithographs, photography, rugs, ethnography, jewelry, interior and exterior sculptures, folk art, collectible and rare books, architectural elements, autographs, Judaica, vintage toys, philatelic items, crystal, sterling silver, lamps, luxury linens, textiles and more.
Many highlights of this online auction include the Gleb Derujinsky’s wood carved “Nude Beauty,” Art Deco Frankart figural table lamp, pair of Cubist Heifetz ceramic figural lamps, Donald Deskey midcentury pair of andirons, Art Deco Mautner glass and chrome garniture set and a pair of Nineteenth Century cast iron figural ram architectural elements.
Linen and textile offerings will enhance any collection or home. The setting of large French D. Porthault tablecloth and dinner napkins of the “Lily of the Valley” pattern with blue flowers on white field sets the tone of this category. In addition are the antique American Amish Mennonite fan quilt, circa 1890s, and a Nineteenth Century carved giltwood fire-screen having a needlepoint inset from the Lady and the Unicorn series: A Mon Seul Desire.
Historical documents offered include a British royal document dated 1692 with portraits of King William III and Queen Mary II; it is said that John Stow, who devoted much of his time to collecting books and documents, whose Annales or General Chronicle of England (1615), included in the auction, furnished inspiration for Shakespeare’s Henry IV and an Eighteenth Century map: Carte du Canton de Bale, Jacques Clermont, Paris. Advancing into the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries are personal calling cards inscribed by US President Andrew Johnson, his wife Eliza and their eldest daughter Martha Johnson Patterson; handwritten letter to Edith Rix by Lewis Carrol, dated December 1886; British Royal Navy certificate signed by Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, known as Elizabeth R, 1953; and Cecil Beaton handwritten letter and photograph of author Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen, author of Out of Africa) of 1962.
Elegance is reflected in the jewelry offerings highlighted by an antique 18K diamond cluster dome ring; Elgin pocket watch with 14K gold outdoor motif hunter case; Italian 14K yellow gold sapphire and diamond necklace; including Nineteenth Century vertu; Meerschaum smoking pipes; miniature paintings and more.
The variety of art is diverse. The Georges Roualt aquatint, “Miserere,” begins this grouping continuing with Nineteenth Century Continental paintings; the 1966 oil painting “Manhattan” by Risaburo Kimura; Garry Lorence Rich’s 1971 watercolor, “Drop-See”; the painting “Three Monks” by the Vietnamese artist Dinh Quan; from the outstanding Haitian master Prefete Duffaut’s oil painting, “Imaginary City” and emanating from the street art scene of New York City are the works of LA II (Angel Ortiz), collaborator of the late Keith Haring. Adding to this category are several published illustration paintings and more.
The category of ceramics and silver include several Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica reticulated dinner plates; William Moorcroft matte glaze fish pitcher, circa 1930s; Pampaloni Bichierogra hammered sterling silver shell-form ewer from Italy; Nineteenth Century French Old Paris porcelain vase; pair of Moser glass gilt enamel purple Ombré finger bowls and underplates; Italian luster majolica Dolphin double-handle urn; 1987 figural bronze vase by Peter Rice-Jones; Danish Baca vase by Nils Thorsson for Royal Copenhagen; and from the designer Ercole Barovier a Murano bronze etched twisted roped mirrored tray.
Photography offerings include an original photograph and signature by Anne Leibowitz of the genitals of Jeff Koons; black and white signed photographs by Bruce Cratsley; pre-publication photographs by Harold Lambert; rounded out with an image of El Capitan by Ansel Adams stamped and dated, 1966.
Automatons, carnival objects and toys are in this sale. Consider the unique French automaton singing bird housed in a gilt cage; antique Swiss inlaid music box; Nineteenth Century Ives clockwork butter churner toy; American antique amusement park ring toss game; large carnival painted fish held in check by a roped sea corral; early Twentieth Century cast iron painted carnival carousel jumper horse; Johnny Upside Down Miller Aviation Broadside exhibition posters, 1929, and rounding out these highlights is the original playbill advertising General Tom Thumb at the London Surrey Theater, 1847.
Collectors of folk art and Native American elements will not be disappointed. A few highlights are a folk art copper fish weathervane; diminutive rustic wood cabin chest of three draws; R.C. Gorman 1979 signed serigraph, “Seated Woman,” and polychrome olla vase signed by the artist Nicolas Silveira. Of note are a sterling silver and turquoise cuff bracelet and a variety of Taxco sterling silver jewelry.
