MOUNT STERLING, KY. — Caswell Prewitt Auctions will be offering a dozen Oriental rugs in the firm’s March 17 timed online auction being conducted for Clifton Anderson. The focus of this sale is particularly aimed at Kentucky made, fine and decorative arts. All selling is unreserved with no buyer’s premium charged.
Three collector-grade Nineteenth Century Kazaks and an antique Turkish Bergama are highlights that have not felt a footstep in the last half century. All formerly hung on the walls of the Dottie Cummings estate in Dayton Ohio. She was a studied collector of Caucasian rugs who was well known in the Midwest as an astute collector who liberally shared her knowledge. From another estate is a room-size antique Tabriz to be sold, which survives with virtually no wear nor stain. Along with the rugs will be a varied selection of Kentucky and regional furniture, including three sugar chests and a Tennessee Jackson press. Five weathervanes; coin silver by Thomas Gray, Thomas Phillips, Asa Blanchard, E.C. O’Rear & Samuel Ayres, to name a few, are included. Among the silver is a monumental repousse silver chalice by Daniel Winchester while working for W&A Cooper at Louisville in 1841-42. Paintings by familiar Kentucky artists include examples by Henry Faulkner, Carl Brenner, Harvey Joiner, Paul Sawyier, Edgar Tolson and Paul Plaschke, among others. The focus is particularly aimed at Kentucky made, fine and decorative arts.
