WOODBURY, CONN. — On Tuesday, May 21, Schwenke Auctioneers will offer more than 650 lots from estates and consignors in New York and Connecticut. The sale includes American folk art and country furniture from several Litchfield County estates, including a collection of early advertising tins; American and European fine art; American formal and country furniture; Continental and English furniture and decorations; MCM art glass, furniture and decorations; a group of antique bronze lighting; several groups of sterling silver; gold and other coins; Chinese porcelains and decorative arts; and many estate Oriental carpets.
The sale will begin at 10 am and will be broadcast live on LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable. Absentee and phone bidding is available by registering directly with Schwenke Auctioneers. Live preview is being conducted in Woodbury on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 16-18, from 10 am to 5 pm.
Among the many choice estate lots being offered is a group of five New York Chippendale carved mahogany “tassel back” side chairs from a Hartford County estate; a South African marquetry baroque cabinet on stand with Chinese porcelain mounts from a Westchester County, N.Y., collector; several Chinese porcelain wares from a New York collector, including a signed Chinese blue and white porcelain “dragon” bowl; an Abstract Expressionist watercolor by Spanish artist Jose Guerrero from an Oxford, Conn., collector; a sizable lifetime collection of advertising tins and memorabilia, folk art and American primitive and country furniture from a Cheshire, Conn., collector, featuring a sized group of painted Shaker-style pantry boxes, several red painted and other cupboards, chests and tables and textiles and other country Americana items and wares; and a Federal period Aaron Willard banjo clock from a Sharon, Conn., collector.
There will be decorative arts from a Hartford County collector, including a Hely Lima NYC street cafe scene diorama and a group of Oriental carpets, featuring a collectible Persian Bakshaish rug; a large grouping of country furniture, primitives and folk art from a Wilton, Conn., collection, also featuring a group of sporting bronzes and memorabilia; a group of sterling silver, including a choice number of Mexican silver items attributed to William Spratling; a Connecticut Queen Anne tray top tea table in cherry from a Woodbridge, Conn., institution; a large selection of decorative arts and folk art from a Bridgeport, Conn., estate, including several folk art carved carousel animals, a group of Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Tiffany Studios lighting and a rare decorated cast iron boudoir safe; a group of ethnic and Asian decorative arts from a Washington, Conn., collector, including a pair of polychrome decorated Chinese porcelain garden seats; and a group of fine art from a Waterford, Conn., collector, including two Lucien Abrams large oil on canvas portraits of ladies.
The sale offers a group of coins and currency, featuring two .999 gold Kennedy dollar proof coins; a group of sterling silver from a Brookfield, Conn., collector, featuring several items of Georg Jensen sterling flatware; American and English furniture from a Norwich, Conn., estate, including a set of six British Chippendale side chairs and a Connecticut Chippendale figured maple tall chest; a group of American furniture from a Litchfield County collector, including a set of four carved mahogany side chairs attributed to Duncan Phyfe and a rare pair of large carved and gilded convex mirrors from Albany, N.Y.; a large group of decorative arts from a New Milford, Conn., estate, including a suite of John Stuart midcentury walnut furniture and a small group of impressionist art by Claude M. Chevalier, previously unknown, and a Cartier gold hunter cased pocket watch; a group of fine and decorative arts from another Litchfield County collector, including two Angel Ortiz graffiti decorated female torso forms; a group of fashion items from a Litchfield County collector, including a Diane Furstenburg gold tone life mask evening bag; a collection of more than 65 ballpoint pens from a Southbury, Conn., collector; fine art from a Woodbury institution; a group of sterling and coin silver items from a Litchfield County collector, featuring a rare John Coburn Eighteenth Century Boston scissor-form sugar nips.
The sale ends with several lots of estate Oriental carpets, including Persian, Caucasian and Turkoman room and scatter-sized rugs and other regional and modern rugs of varying sizes. Most notable among the carpets and related textiles is a large Persian rug, a choice Persian Heriz room size rug and a rare Persian Backshaish rug.
