PLAINVILLE, CONN. — Automobilia Auctions will host its annual auction on April 6. The auction of 450 lots at no reserve will feature a diverse selection of period automobilia and literature. The company has been conducting no reserve auctions for the past 30 years.
Many items of historical significance will be included in this sale. The Paul Newman collection features an original 1975 racing helmet. Newman, one of America’s favorite movie stars, had a passion for automobile racing. He started in the 1970s and competed with some of the best drivers in the sport. His home track was Lime Rock, Conn., mostly with the Bob Sharp Nissan – Datsun organization. Newman participated as a driver and team owner for 40 years. He partnered with Carl Haas to form the Newman Haas Indianapolis 500 race team. Mario and Michael Andretti were among the team.
The Newman helmet has period photo documentation. Also included are period photos, autographed items, models, press kits, etc., of Newman’s racing career.
An original Newman-Haas team jacket is also in the sale. Specific ownership of the jacket is not guaranteed, except that it is a period item.
The beginning of auto racing in America was the Vanderbilt Cup Races that started on the public roads of Long Island, New York. The series ran from 1904 to 1910 in New York and later in other parts of the country. Wm K. Vanderbilt promoted the races and drew competitors from the best of Europe and the United States. A diversified collection of Vanderbilt Cup items will be offered.
Included are programs starting in 1904, pennants, judge’s armbands, participant ribbons, etc. Vanderbilt Cup items are very much in demand and a collection like this is seldom offered at auction. All Vanderbilt Cup items are original and guaranteed.
Also in the sale is an extremely large collection of period sales literature starting in the early 1900s. Due to the size, the literature will be offered in large quantity lots. Collectors and dealers will be able to obtain inventory for the upcoming vendor season. Other items in the sale will be signs, photos, pennants, badges, posters, license plates, clothing, etc.
