BOUCKVILLE, N.Y. — Madison and Bouckville, two small villages between Syracuse and Hamilton N.Y., will become thriving marketplaces for the weekend of May 31-June 2 to all who love antiques and early collectibles. Attracting about 2,000 exhibiting antiques dealers and many thousands of shopping collectors, the main street, Route 20, connecting the two tiny towns will be reduced to a 15 mile per hour speed as drivers peruse the fields and shops looking for the most convenient parking for the field they next want to shop. In fact, the driving lanes of the road are reduced for all the pedestrian traffic shopping along the road as well.
This spring, Friday through Sunday, a dozen show fields will be lined with exhibitors showing their early antiques. All fields have free admission, and the local tourist board claims about 10,000 shoppers will arrive for the June shopping spree. There is plenty of parking for the early birds, some of which is charged and some free and food service is available on most every field.
Northern New York has been well known as a great source for fresh antiques, especially American made Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century furniture, textiles and household accessories. This history creates an environment at this market and again August 12-18 where shoppers, homeowners, collectors, decorators and a great many dealers from other areas seize first-time-out treasures for their homes and inventories.
Over the years names have changed, owners have retired and sold to new show managers, but the fields continue to thrive as one of the premier opportunities for finding great early American treasures. Among the larger fields, Cider House Antiques has been adding several features since ownership changed about 10 years ago and again last year, to include free parking, a large campground and good food service.
Out Front Show is across the road and among the markets with a permanent building onsite giving weather protection for the exhibitors. East Expo is only two booths deep from the street but then it is about a quarter mile long with several multi-dealer tents.
Butternut Hill will reopen this June under new management, Tim Fonda and his family, with an area for camping and recreation vehicles as well as the show field.
The Boyce family will again be doing double duty with their Quaker Acres field at the east end and shop at the west end of all the activities, hosting about 150 exhibitors. If arriving from the east, theirs is one of the first fields with good access to parking as well as shopping.
Show days are Friday through Sunday May 31- June 2. The day prior is setup day for the dealers, with most fields allowing shoppers to begin to wander as the exhibitors unload their collections. Hotels for visitors and dealers are the chains in Utica and Syracuse as well as several in nearby Hamilton. This country crossroads, Route 20 and 12B, is about 25 miles south of Syracuse and Southwest of Utica.
