NEW YORK CITY — On April 21, Auctions at Showplace will open the spring auction season with 280 lots of fine and decorative arts sourced directly from New York City area estates and collections. A wide array of fine art, antiques, artifacts, jewelry, designer fashion pieces, art glass, ceramics, silver, lighting, sculptures, bronzes, paintings and more are on offer.
Highlights include an antique Art Nouveau Louis Majorelle “Modele Chicoree” carved mahogany sideboard, circa 1905. A close variant of this model is illustrated in A. Duncan’s 1991 book Louis Majorelle: Master of Art Nouveau Design. Next is Louis Aston Knight’s 1941 painting of the Queensboro Bridge from Sutton Place with provenance from Spanierman Gallery. Also of note is a collection of 13 Spanish American Colonial floriform silver articles, Eighteenth Century, some signed “L.D.” and comprising one bowl with Sotheby’s New York label, one large ovoid platter, five small dishes and six round plates weighing in at 154.62 troy ounces.
Paintings on offer open with a portrait of a girl on red ground by Alfred Henry Maurer with a label “E. Weyhe…Baker #2461A / Girl on Red Ground / original oil by / Alfred Maurer” on verso.
Next is “Homestead Herald” an oil on canvas by Curt Walters depicting a springtime landscape scene with flowering trees and a red roofed house. It is followed by four lots of paintings by William Scharf executed in the 1990s and an oil on canvas landscape by the renowned Provincetown landscape painter Anne Packard. Highlights close with Thomas Waterman Wood’s oil on canvas “The Knitting Lesson.”
The auction features a collection of prints and multiples. Of note is “The Smile” by Louise Bourgeois numbered 24 from an edition of 50 drypoint etchings. There is a set of four screenprint cards from Andy Warhol’s “Myth Series” comprising Superman, Howdy Doody, Mammy and Dracula, each signed. It is followed by Alexander Colville’s lithograph in colors “To Prince Edward Island” and three Art Deco industrial lithographs by Louis Lozowick and a 1930s Martin Lewis drypoint. Highlights close with Maria Lassnig’s 2008 screenprint “Double Self Portrait.”
The sale includes a grouping of photography from the estate of an Upper East Side collector with works on offer by Ralston Crawford, Louis Lozowick, Andreas Feininger, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Peter Stackpole, Lewis Hine, O. Winston Link and Berenice Abbott. Many works in the collection are industrial in nature. Of note is the collection of Abbott works depicting the construction of Rockefeller Center. Also on offer are Lewis Wickes Hine’s “Man on Hoisting Ball by the Empire State Building” and Peter Stackpole’s “Painting the Suspender Cables, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge” from 1936.
Furnishings on offer at Showplace include a set of three chocolate brown Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset “Togo” sectional sofas. Next is a Holly Hunt “Trice” Modern reclaimed walnut twin pedestal dining table by Living Wood Design and a set of eight beechwood Norman Cherner dining chairs, including two pretzel arm chairs. Also of note is a Chris Lehrecke walnut dining table with a textured edge made in 2004 and a vintage Stickley Morris lounge chair upholstered in green suede.
The sale includes objects of historical and decorative interest, including an Eighteenth Century Spanish Colonial Renaissance silver altar cross with a winged mascaron motif. Next is an ancient Roman imperial period carved bone goddess Venus figure on a bronze base. Also of interest are a pair of Grand Tour Revival smoky quartz orbs upon gilt bronze laurel wreath stands mounted atop smoky, rock crystal bases.
Jewelry offerings include a Girard Perragaux 18K yellow gold dress watch, featuring a silver colored dial with gold baton indexes. Next is a Bulgari 18K yellow gold diamond emerald ring in a chevron design featuring 19 channel set round brilliant diamonds and 19 channel set round brilliant cut emeralds. Also of note is a pair of vintage Tiffany & Co. Etoile 18K PT950 diamond earrings.
