NORTH HAMPTON, N.H. — So many of us remember our childhood collections and how much they meant to us. Very few, if any, would ever have a collection like this. Paul McInnis of Paul McInnis, LLC, made a recent discovery of a collection of prewar baseball cards and Golden Age comics in Durham, N.H. (the collection originated in Manchester, N.H.)
McInnis was brought in to review the estate but quickly saw that the baseball card and comic book collection was very special. “This is a significant collection because of its age, condition and rarity,” said McInnis. “These cards and books will be fresh to the market and have never been traded since originally being purchased by the owner who kept them together.” McInnis had the cards and comics graded through SGC & CGC Grading. “We knew the importance of grading in today’s market and went through that process to present the most authentic buying experience for our bidders, ensuring fair and transparent competition for this desirable collection,” McInnis added. The Superman and Batman comics are from the 1940s with many grading very high since they were so well preserved. Some of the books are expected to sell for several thousands of dollars.
The Harry W. O’Brien single-owner collection is being sold by Paul McInnis, LLC, for the benefit of the University of New Hampshire Scholarship Fund. O’Brien grew up in Manchester, N.H., his dad, Daniel, served in World War I and World War II and likely gathered the early cards, encouraging Harry to continue the collection.
The collection includes hundreds of pre-war baseball tobacco and gum cards, Golden Age Superman and Batman comics, along with hundreds of other trading card series. Of specific interest to collectors are 300 1909-1911 T206 cards, including 48 Hall of Fame players, complete 1911 T201 Mecca Folder Series, 80 Goudey Big League cards, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and 28 Hall of Fame players, T205 Gold Border Series cards, Philadelphia Caramel cards, including Cobb, Matthewson and Wagner, 19 1934 Exhibits 4 on 1 cards, including Ruth and more. After the grading was completed, there was another exciting discovery of five rare ticket stubs, two of which were from the first ever scheduled, official game at Fenway Park on April 19, 1912, the same year the Red Sox won the World Series and just five days after the sinking of the Titanic.
The live virtual webcast auction will be conducted on Saturday May 4, at 11 am. To review the collection and register to bid go to www.auction.paulmcinnis.com/auctions. For information, 603-964-1301 or emailpaul@paulmcinnis.com.
