NEW YORK CITY — The American Art Fair celebrates its 17th year from May 11-14 at the Bohemian National Hall. Established in 2008, the American Art Fair features hundreds of American Eighteenth to Twenty-First Century works of art exhibited by 17 premier specialists.

Smiles, Debra Force Fine Art, Dolan/Maxwell, Graham Shay 1857, Forum Gallery, Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Kraushaar Galleries, Questroyal Fine Art and Thomas Colville Fine Art. Two seasoned exhibitors are returning: Adelson Galleries and Meredith Ward Fine Art; first time exhibitors are Hawthorne Fine Art and Schwarz Gallery.

Returning after their successful debut introducing folk art to the fair last May, David A. Schorsch-Eileen M. Smiles are exhibiting several Nineteenth Century portraits, including Ammi Phillips’ circa 1816 “Ruth (Haynes) Palmer”; Isaac Shurliff’s circa 1830 “Self portrait”; a circa 1840 “Young African American Girl, and Cat Seated on a One-Armed Rocker,” attributed to Harriet Guilford (1884).
For a second year, Dolan/Maxwell’s booth is devoted to works by African American artists and women, including Elizabeth Catlett’s 2007 bronze, “Standing Strong.” Joining the Catlett elsewhere in the fair are sculptures by Jose De Creeft and Cecil de Blaquière Howard at Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts. Among the sculptures at Graham Shay 1857 are Albert Wein’s “Moment of Waiting,” circa 1960 and Harriet Whitney Frishmuth’s “Joy of the Waters,” 1920.
Notable works on paper include ones by John Singer Sargent and Maurice Prendergast (Adelson Galleries); Andrew Wyeth (Debra Force Fine Art); Emil Bisttram (D. Wigmore Fine Art and Thomas Colville Fine Art); and Charles Burchfield (Meredith Ward Fine Art and Questroyal Fine Art).
Artists featured this year include Joseph Stella (Avery Galleries and Hirschl & Adler Galleries), Robert Henri (Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts and Hirschl & Adler Galleries), Thomas Hart Benton (Alexandre Galleries), Charles Sheeler (Forum Gallery), Charles Drogkamp (Schwarz Gallery) and Edward Steichen (Debra Force Fine Art). Along with Catlett and Slobodkina, women artists shown include Doris Lee, Elaine de Kooning, Anna Walinska, Martha Walter, Rosina Emmet Sherwood, Sally Michel, Julie Hart Beers, Louise King Cox, Fildelia Bridges and Mary Kollock; many of these are exhibited by Hawthorne Fine Art, a new exhibitor specializing in women artists.
