BERKELEY, CALIF. — PBA Galleries will present its auction of elite Americana, travel, world history and rare cartography to be conducted on June 27 at 11 am Pacific time. The sale includes selections from the Jim Hier collection of US presidents and will showcase more than 100 meticulously curated lots, comprising rare, intriguing and historically important lots. From the Jim Hier Collection to manuscripts illuminating the global historical tapestry, and from cherished cartographic rarities spanning five centuries to original photographs capturing moments lost in time, this auction promises to delight and inspire collectors worldwide.
Featured from the Jim Hier collection of US presidents is Franklin Roosevelt’s Address of Franklin D. Roosevelt President of the United States: Chautauqua, N.Y., August 14, 1936. This “I Hate War” speech captures the essence of FDR’s sentiments during a pivotal moment in history, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy, international cooperation and the need to avoid the devastating consequences of military conflict. This copy is inscribed “For Anna Eleanor Roosevelt with all my love Franklin D. Roosevelt,” and additionally inscribed in the president’s hand on the front pastedown, “No. 1 of 50 copies. F.D.R.” ($7/10,000).
The sale offers an additional dozen lots from the Jim Hier collection, which represents the variety of material to be auctioned in future PBA sales, including the August 8 Americana auction.
]Rare Americana treasures from California’s Gold Rush era, the Civil War, Philippine Insurrection and the Wild West, alongside captivating manuscripts and prints capture the spirit of exploration and discovery. These include a manuscript census listing the number of residents at each of six California missions from San Luis Obispo north to San Juan Bautista, plus the Pueblo de San Jose and Presidio de Monterrey, dated 1798 ($20/30,000); an important archive of letters giving a vivid portrayal of the Civil War experience through the eyes of a Union Army officer ($8/12,000); an archive of more than 100 letters and miscellaneous papers, written to and from a private in the 4th US Cavalry in the Philippines during the Aguinaldo insurrection ($5/8,000); and four lots of newspapers related to the Earp brothers and other participants at the OK Corral.
Highlights from the rare cartography, prints, views and photographs section include the first English edition of the official account of the expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark across the American continent to the Pacific Ocean accompanied by the important map of their route ($15/25,000); a map of the most inhabited part of New England, the 1777 French publication by Le Rouge of the important Jefferys-Green map of New England, offering a close view of the country during the American Revolution ($3/5,000); and a lot of nine original watercolors of Colorado by British architect and artist Francis Cranmer Penrose ($3/5,000).
