GENESEO, N.Y. — Cottone’s is offering a fine selection of lamps by Tiffany Studios and Duffner & Kimberly, a collection of Native American artifacts, an American and European clock collection, paintings, modern prints and Twentieth Century design, decorative arts, gold coins and currency, estate silver, jewelry, firearms, Americana and more, from private institutions, estates and individuals. Both sessions begin at noon EDT on May 30 and 31.
On Thursday, May 30, the many wonderful lamps by Tiffany Studios are highlighted by a fine Dogwood lamp, with a 22-inch shade, ($50/80,000); a Clematis hanging lamp, with a 29-inch shade ($50/80,000); and a Dragonfly example with a 16-inch shade ($30/50,000). Also from Tiffany Studios are Black-Eyed Susan, 12-light Lily, Bellflower, Apple Blossom and Daffodil examples, as well as accessories, that will cross the auction block. Fine and rare lamps by Duffner & Kimberly will also be offered, including a Peony floor lamp with a 24-inch shade ($30/50,000) and a Grape Mosaic floor lamp with a 27-inch shade ($5/8,000).
Standouts in paintings and prints include Bridget Riley’s (British, b 1931) “Print for Chicago 8” (from the portfolio “Conspiracy: The Artist as Witness”) serigraph, 24 by 18 inches ($3/5,000).
Two works by Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) from the “Ladies & Gentleman” series, each with estimates of $2/4,000. Several oil on canvas paintings by Emile Gruppe (American, 1896-1978) include a harbor scene, 30 by 25 inches ($4/6,000). A work by Emmi Whitehorse (Native American / Dine, b 1957), “Rincon Marquez,” Series May 1987, #627, mixed media on paper mounted on canvas, 38 by 50 inches, is estimated at $2/4,000. The painting comes out of a private collection in Buffalo, N.Y., and was purchased from Lew Allen / Butler Fine Art, Santa Fe, N.M. Other paintings and prints by artists, Patrick Caulfield (British, 1936-2005), Terry Frost (British, 1915-2003), Carl W. Peters (American, 1897-1980), Emma Lampert Cooper (American, 1855-1920) and Jan Josef Horemans I (Antwerp, 1682-1759), will also be offered.
Decorative arts will feature a Seventeenth Century Dutch Verdure tapestry, measuring more than 9 by 15 feet, estimated at $4/6,000. A selection of fine French onyx and champleve enamel pedestals are included, as is a Carrara marble sculpture of a young boy by Luigi Bienaime (Italian, 1795-1878), that stands more than 31 inches tall and is estimated at $1,5/2,500.
The Friday, May 31 session features an extensive collection of Native American artifacts and jewelry from a private Boston collection. A sample includes an early Twentieth Century Cheyenne or Sioux beaded vest ($2/4,000); a Sioux Elk Dreamer’s Society quilled hide girl’s dress ($4/6,000). The collection also includes Navajo weavings, Northwest Coast artifacts, Hopi, Zuni, Central Plains objects and more.
Musical instruments include a fine Gibson Super 400 Starburst guitar ($7/10,000), which descended in the family of the original owners. A fine Regina Changer Upright music box, with a figured walnut case and 12 27-inch disks is estimated at $8/12,000.
European clocks are highlighted by a fine and rare gilt bronze gravity ball waterwheel industrial Clock, on an onyx base, circa 1900 ($15/25,000). Other standouts from a Mid-west collection include a French Three Graces annular clock, French industrial lighthouse torsion clock and a Guilmet conical swinger.
American clocks include a fine Seth Thomas Regulator No. 14, circa 1886, with a carved burl and walnut case ($10/15,000), regulators numbered 5, 7 and a rare number 12 will also cross the auction block. E. Howard & Co regulators will be highlighted by numbers 2, 10, 11, 12 and 13; clocks by William L. Gilbert, J.C. Brown, Simon Willard and Louis P. Juvet will also be featured.
