OWEGO, N.Y. — Pegasus auction will conduct a two-day unreserved estate auction featuring a large lifelong collection of antiques. The house is a treasure trove of boxes undisturbed for decades and something of quality in every drawer, cupboard, nook and cranny. The auction is to be conducted onsite on Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9, at 11 am.
The estate features a plethora of unexpected gems, which begin with a massive bronze and cut crystal chandelier. The elaborate metalwork consists of bronze faces, bronze metalwork, silverplated grape leaves and a large cut glass centerpiece. Other lighting includes more than 20 lamps, including a Frederick Carder Steuben table lamp, other possible Frederick Carder examples, art glass, cut glass, Sandwich, figural and more. Also included is a Damascus floor lamp and other examples.
Art glass includes a large number of Steuben and related pieces with many yet to be unpacked from the basement. These include some rare examples by Frederick Carder, pieces with delightful colors and designs as well as signed examples.
Porcelain includes works by Sevres, including an artist-signed elaborately marked bonbonniere and a Marie Antoinette portrait cup with its meticulously hand-painted floral saucer. A sizable estate collection of R&S Germany, including chocolate sets and floral decorated examples, will be offered accompanied by a massive Nineteenth Century majolica urn and pedestal.
Oriental antiques are represented with a collection of Chinese and related furniture that include an elaborately carved large chair. This bears intricate turtle handles, dragons and bats, which are Chinese symbols representing good luck, happiness and longevity. Other similar chairs include arm and side chairs, carved, as well as a group of rosewood and marble stands. The collection also has two large Chinese tables. Chinese objets d’art also include an unusual lavender jade Guanyin as well as large porcelain figures and Chinese lamps.
One of the main features of the estate will be the collection of rare period furniture and related objects. Examples include an unusual Nineteenth Century organ or piano chair with carved hairy paw feet and a sea serpent on each side. There is a pair of John Henry Belter side chairs with the expected laminated rosewood construction the company was known for. The estate features a
Nineteenth Century mahogany bedroom suite in original condition with a large bed, marble top ornate dresser and washstand.
Also included is an Eighteenth Century French high back sofa with original paint and gilding. An example of exceptional woodworking is found on the large mahogany Victorian bookcase with gothic elements and fluted drapery carved sides. Another offering is an unusual Nineteenth Century mahogany inlaid trick leg table with a mechanical leg mechanism. An unusual Aesthetic Movement signed Vaill Victorian chair possesses elaborate decoration and its original upholstery. Finally, a cornucopia carved Victorian sofa with and two matching crescent shaped footstools will be offered.
Ready for summer is a circa 1900 long ice cream parlor table with a marble top and ornate cast iron base. Finally, a large number of Nineteenth Century smaller stands and tables, including a pair of bird’s-eye maple tall stands, brass and bronze, Oriental, Victorian marble top and similar examples will find their way into the sale.
French furniture is represented by a boulle game table with ornate and ormolu decoration. Accompanying this is an unusual boulle table with a removable top revealing an inner metal liner that lifts out. The estate includes a French ormolu vitrine, a French gilt wood parlor suite and a French mechanical writing desk. With elaborate painting, ormolu, inlay and decoration, pulling out the drawer activates the roll, which slides to open the desk and compartments. A secret button unlocks the drawers.
Several examples of early clocks include a Federal tall case clock with wooden works, a tall case Ithaca clock, a Nineteenth Century pillar and scroll wall clock with an Owego, N.Y., maker’s label, an early cuckoo clock and others.
Finally, art is represented by a Nineteenth Century continental school girl with dog landscape, a J.B. Morse landscape oil on canvas in an elaborate gilt frame, a unique Mission Arts and Crafts triptych lithograph by Robert Von Vorst Sewell, as well as other oils, lithographs, prints, etc.
Militaria will include Civil War rifles and other military related items.
Rounding out the sale will be sterling silver, including Tiffany, Cartier, objets de vertu and many more hidden and interesting finds, which include those from the secret panels containing cut glass and more.
