BEACON, N.Y. — Hudson Valley Auctioneers will present an unreserved antiques and estate auction with absentee, phone and online bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com on Monday, June 17, at 3 pm EST beginning with a collection of period Hollywood movie and stars related magazines and ephemera from the estate of Paul Trent.
The sale includes select items from estates in Woodstock, Putnam Valley, Scarsdale, Carmel and other locales.
The Paul Trent collection was housed in a large Victorian mansion on a bluff in Hastings on Hudson.
Trent, a Mercy College professor, writer and producer, started collecting ephemera and memorabilia when he was 14 years old, born in 1940 he amassed an extensive collection of material included in the auction in addition to thousands of items available through direct sale prior to and during the preview.
The general sale begins at 5 pm with Asian items highlighted by two wood carved gilt Japanese figures, Chinese coins, various porcelains and four stone archer rings.
A call from a former client collector prompted a day-long project to remove from their local lakefront home a Victorian garden collection gathered from local valley auctions and sales beginning in the early 1990s. Pairs and singles of urns, several figural hitching posts, a rare cast iron table, a Fiske zinc egret fountain, a pair of large Mott iron basins, a tall griffon urn and two period iron standing bucks, among other items, will once again be fresh to the market.
Furniture selections from early to recent include several period Continental and English case pieces, a gumwood kasten with replaced feet, inlaid cabinets, Victoriana, a signed Margolis drop leaf, lots of early French Provincial, Stickley Audi and a large offering of signed “Sticks” painted furniture.
Midcentury items include a Hornslet teak dining table, a Silas Seandel Brutalist coffee table, three Maurice Villency travertine tables, a Bruno Mathsson designed drop leaf, Labova, Walter K and Miller office chairs, a pair of ceruled Mastercraft chests, a Venini Scarpa beehive vase and an oversize cased handkerchief vase.
Artworks are offered throughout the sale with traditional, modern and abstract artworks as well as prints and other mediums. Artists include Henry Hensche, Morton Lichter, Louise Abrams, Calder prints, bronzes by H.W. Hauptman, Edward Kemeys, Karl Gruppe, M. Moreau, G. Sanson and several others.
A selection of estate jewelry will be sold featuring Art Deco diamonds, lots of gold and other stones and silver and enamel work. An enormous selection of sterling and .800 silver, well over 1,000 troy ounces, is led by a four-piece heavily worked coin tea set by Marquand & Co, NY of 147 troy ounces, probably about 1830. Ten lots of various vintage clothing from several periods feature a Jacques Fath gown.
Other items of interest in the 650-lot sale are an English Gothic-style tall clock with music box works by Pearce and Sons, Tiffany Favrile glass, a small Native American collection, several marble carved busts, one by Cesare Lapini, two carved marble angels and a rare Gales Patent calendar clock.
In-house previews are Sunday, June 16, from 1 to 5 pm and Monday from noon to 2:30 pm or by appointment beginning June 7.
