RENO, NEV. — The Coeur d’Alene Art Auction, known for selling Western paintings and sculpture from historical and contemporary artists, will present its 39th annual Western Art auction on July 27 at the Grand Sierra Resort. With more than $400 million in sales over the last 20 years alone, the auction has been hailed as “The Biggest and Most Successful Auction of Western Art” by the Wall Street Journal, and was named “The Most Important Annual Event for Collectors of Western Art” by The New York Times. Once again, the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction is certain to be the high point of the Western Art world.
“We are thrilled with the quality of consignments received this year,” said auction partner Mike Overby. “Across the board, this may be our strongest sale in 10 years. We are especially honored to bring to market A Western Legend: Works from the Red McCombs Collection, a significant group of works from the famed Texan. McCombs was an entrepreneur who possessed the same keen eye for paintings as he did for business.”
McCombs, born in rural West Texas, rose to become one of the most respected businessmen in the United States. His interests were wide-ranging, including auto dealerships, oil and gas and communications. McCombs also left his mark on the sporting world, owning the Minnesota Vikings, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and playing a significant role in bringing Formula 1 racing to America. His love for the West drove his passion for collecting some of the finest examples of Western art. Works by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, John Clymer, Howard Terpning and many others were acquired with the same zeal he showed for business, capturing the spirit of the American West.
Long known as the market leader for the Western master Charles M. Russell, the 2024 auction will feature more than a dozen works by the artist. Headlining the offerings will be “The Ambush,” a highly important oil estimated at $400/600,000. Additional works include “Bronc Rider” ($150/250,000); “The Breaks” ($100/150,000); “Friend Cal Letter” ($80/120,000); and one of the rarest sculptures by Russell ever to come to market, “The Combat” ($80/120,000) the first known casting to ever come to auction and should create fireworks in the auction room.
Russell’s contemporary, Frederic Remington, is also well represented with both paintings and sculptures. A “Wind Jammer” ($400/600,000) is an iconic oil, and will be accompanied by “Boots and Saddles” ($300/500,000) and “The Scout” ($100/150,000). Of particular interest this year are two low-numbered sculptures: “The “Rattlesnake #21 ($200/300,000) and “The Broncho Buster” #33 ($100/150,000).
Howard Terpning has been the foremost contemporary Western painter for more than 60 years, and this year’s sale features several of his masterpieces, including “Army Mules No More,” which is one of his most famous works. Originally created for the prestigious Western Heritage Sale in Houston, the 30-by-50-inch oil carries an estimate of $600/900,000.
Also crossing the block will be “Lady of the House” ($500/750,000), which was awarded the Oklahoma Centennial Award at the 2007 Prix de West. Other Terpning paintings to be offered include “Sits Beside Me Wife” ($250/350,000); “Gathering at Dawn” ($200/300,000); and “Along the Old North Trail” ($125/175,000).
John Clymer, Tom Lovell and Frank McCarthy were three of the finest Western illustrators of the Twentieth Century, and the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction will offer the most important works, respectively, to hit the market in the last decade.
“Trader at Pierre’s Hole Rendezvous” ($300/500,000) by Clymer, hails from the McCombs collection, where it has resided for more than 30 years. Lovell’s “The Blackfeet Wall” ($200/300,000) comes from the Lovell family, and has never been on the market, having been on long-term loan at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. McCarthy’s “Splitting the Thundering Herd” ($100/150,000) is a large-scale triptych, and has been in a prominent Barrington Hills, Ill., collection since it was first painted in 1994.
Two important works by William R. Leigh are highlights of this year’s sale. “Embarrassed” (Range Pony in Town) ($600/900,000) and “The Narrowing Circle” ($500/750,000) are sure to generate significant interest.
Other notable works include Frank Tenney Johnson’s nocturne “Riders Loping In” ($300/500,000) and “The Homecoming” ($100/150,000); Harvey Dunn’s “The Homesteaders” ($100/150,000); Henry Farny’s “Crow Warrior” ($100/150,000); Peter Hurd’s “Fence Rider” ($80/120,000); and a major oil by Gerard Curtis Delano, “The Council” ($200/300,000).
