THOMASTON, MAINE — Maine’s midsummer beauty will be the perfect complement to the many fine art and decorative rarities to be presented at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Summer Splendor auction on June 28, 29 and 30.
Owner and auctioneer Kaja Veilleux noted, “This sale will include amazing pieces from the Maine estate of singer songwriter Dan Fogelberg; property from the estate of Thomas Watson Jr (1914-1993), late chairman and chief executive officer of IBM; and an important collection of Brother Thomas Bezanson pottery. We also have an interesting array of art and antiques gathered from homes throughout Maine and New England.”
The fine art category will feature an oil on panel portrait of a young woman by Charles Webster Hawthorne (1872-1930); “Beechwoods,” an impressionist work by Emil Carlsen (1853-1932); and an atmospheric painting depicting the Grand Tetons at dawn by Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902). Among the many sculptures, there will be Bessie Potter Vonnoh’s (1872-1955) 1908 bronze work, titled “The Dance”; and two important marble sculptures from the Dan Fogelberg collection — “Pescatore” (or Neapolitan Fisher Boy) by Cesare Lapini (1848-1893), and an Art Nouveau bust of a lady by Adolphe Cipriani (1880-1930).
The auction will present a selection of Modernist paintings by Tristan Ra (b 1945), Karl Holmqvist (b 1964), Salvatore Scarpitta (1919-2007) and William Thon (1906-2000). Additionally, there will be works by diversity of other important artists, including Stephen Scott Young (b 1957), Thomas Elliot (active 1790-1800), Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), Rembrandt Harmensz Van Rijn (1606-1669), William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), Robert Wyland (b 1956), Lois Mailou Jones (1905-1998), Jules Cheret (1836-1932) and Fernand Renard (1912-1990).
A group of Native American artifacts will be offered, led by the circa 1870 beaded buckskin war shirt of Oglala Sioux Chief George Standing Bear (aka Spotted Horse); a rare circa 1840 Western Apache or Southern Ute mountain lion hide war shirt; and a Germantown Navajo rug with red “eye dazzler” field.
Thomaston Place Auction Galleries handles the inventory of ceramics by artist and Benedictine monk Brother Thomas Bezanson (1929-2007) created while he was part of the monastic community at Weston Priory (Weston, Vt), and this auction will include 30 pieces from this collection (with the balance to be sold in an August sale). Featured among these pieces will be a 13-inch-high ovoid porcelain vase in copper red over celadon blue glaze, a bulbous base with narrow neck and flared rim in dark copper red and blue glaze; and a seven-piece porcelain tea set in iron rutile glaze.
The folk art group will feature three items from the Thomas Watson Jr collection — two 73-inch-tall carved wooden cigar store figures — a Native American and maiden, and a circa 1910-25 double flag stargazer carousel horse by the Parker Company of Leavenworth, Kan. The auction will also include a set of five relief carved and painted folk art panels depicting sailors from “Moby Dick” by Jarvis Boone; and selections of decoys, scrimshaw and marine items, trade signs and ship models.
A handmade 18K gold bracelet set with cabochon amethysts by Mario Buccellati will lead the jewelry and watch collection; along with a 1715 “fleet shipwreck” 8-Escudo gold coin mounted in a 14K gold frame with sapphire; an 18K gold chain link necklace set with round cabochon gemstones and cut diamonds; and a Tiffany & Co. 18K gold and platinum ultra-thin pocket watch.
Featured among the gold and silver collection will be a Tiffany & Co. 18K gold chalice in fitted leather box; a Victorian crocodile covered vanity case fitted with 21 sterling vanity items that belonged to celebrated Austrian actress Jenny Gross (1863-1904); and a pair of English George II period sterling oval meat platters with 1739 date letter.
Among the many lots of antique furniture will be a pair of Nineteenth Century blackamoor carved and upholstered fantasy armchairs from the Thomas Watson Jr collection; an Eighteenth Century American Queen Anne walnut trifid foot highboy; an Eighteenth Century French provincial walnut sideboard; a Nineteenth Century camphorwood campaign chest with desk; and a Seventeenth Century Spanish baroque walnut trestle table.
The sale will offer a large group of firearms and militaria, such as an L.C. Smith crown grade side-by-side 12-gauge shotgun, a Winchester Model 1873 .38-caliber rifle with octagonal barrel and a Napoleonic French court sword with partial scabbard.
The Asian collection will offer: an Eighteenth Century temple scale Siamese gilt bronze Buddha figure; a late Ming-early Qing (Seventeenth – Eighteenth Century) era Chinese painted scroll depicting a scene from “Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute: The Story of Lady Wen-Chi”; and a large Nineteenth Century Japanese Tokyo School okimono depicting a young mother with a toddler on her back.
The auction will begin at 11 am Eastern time each day. The gallery will be open for previews on Saturday, June 15, and June 22 from noon to 4 pm, Monday through Friday, June 17-21, and Monday through Thursday, June 24-27, between 9 am and 4 pm each day. Previewing will also be available on auction days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 28, 29 and 30 from 9 to 11 am.
