NEW YORK CITY — From Mucha to Orkin to a rare Palladium Warhol Basquiat poster, La Belle Epoque’s multi-estate fall auction is scheduled for November 16 at 11 am. It is listed online at Invaluable, LiveAuctioneers, as well as the firm’s own app and website — www.LaBelleEpoque.com. Local New Yorkers can join the auction team live in the firm’s 5,000-square-foot gallery.
For collectors of Modern art, a Richard Bernstein silkscreen artist proof titled “Muse” (known to be Pat Cleveland) is estimated at $2/3,000. Bernstein was a resident of the famed Chelsea Hotel, and most prominently recognized for his work with Interview Magazine and Andy Warhol. There is a poster for the Andy Warhol / Jean-Michel Basquiat collaboration show at Tony Shafrazi Gallery. It is the much scarcer of the two posters produced for the show, which opened on September 14, 1985. This version was issued for an invitation-only, one-night event at the New York nightclub Palladium, following the artists’ exhibition opening ($2/5,000).
Photographs from an array of distinguished photographers, such as Ted Croner, Todd Webb and Paul Caponigro will list alongside a group of Ruth Orkin large-scale photographs of New York, with estimates ranging from $600 to $2,000. Orkin is most well known for her photograph titled “An American Girl in Italy,” but her legacy to women in photography is far greater, known for breaking into a heavily male-dominated industry in the mid Twentieth Century. In addition, a series of photogravures by celebrated photographer Tom Baril have already seen bidder interest pre-sale. Baril is known widely for being the master printer for Robert Mapplethorpe.
For those seeking abstract works on canvas, a noteworthy collection, including works by Dale Chisman (“Passage 5 – Western Theory”), Assunta Sera (“Momentary Glance”), Belle Manes (“Red Shape”), Antonio Carreno (“Motion”), Martha Margulis (“Back Meadow Spring,” “Dunes in Spring II,” “Waves Breaking on Rocky Beach” and “Spring in the Mountains”) and a grand Tsibi Geva (untitled) measuring 70 by 96 inches, to name a few, are on offer.
For collectors of antiques, a pair of rare Alphonse Mucha large-format, home décor works titled “Chasse” and “Peche,” created in 1894 are estimated at $8/10,000 each. An Eighteenth Century Tibetan thangka depicting Padmasambhava the Guru carries an estimate of $1,5/2,500. In the world of miniatures, La Belle Epoque presents a Henriette D’Orleans oval portrait miniature by Jean Baptiste Isabey with an estimate of $600/800; a lava rock cameo signed Rafaello ($200/300) and an oval miniature of a duchess signed by Andrew Plimer ($600/800).
The sale of more than 300 lots offers a broad selection of fine art and collectibles.
La Belle Epoque is at 71 8th Avenue. For more information, 212-362-1770.
