MIDDLEBORO, MASS. — White’s Auctions’ fall 500-plus-lot auction offers a mix of quality, fresh-to-the-market pieces for collectors and dealers alike. The sale will be conducted on Sunday, November 17, at 11 am at the gallery, with online bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com, Invaluable.com and Auctionzip.com. Phone bidding and absentee bidding is always welcome. Bidders can also view and hear the auction in real time through these online sites.
The auction will feature a variety of artworks, sterling flatware and hollowware, as well as a John Wollf Forbes coin silver pot, gold, diamond and gemstone jewelry, pocket watches and wristwatches, a large selection of Navajo sterling and silver jewelry and belt buckles, gold and silver coins.
Notable furniture includes an Eighteenth/Nineteenth Century bonnet top highboy, a flat top highboy, antique clocks, including an Abel Stowell tall clock, as well as a classical lyre game table. Selling also are vintage Eames (Herman Miller) chairs and ottomans, Edward Wormley (Dunbar) armchairs, an L&JG tabouret stand, bronzes, baseball items and more.
To be sold are more than 70 pieces of Nineteenth/Twentieth Century American and Continental artworks from various consignors as well as a large selection of original paintings and prints consigned by a longtime, eclectic art collector. Artists represented include Charles Napier Hemy, C. Meyer Straus, T.M. Nichols, Charles Francois Daubigny, Alexandre-Gaston Guignard, Isaac Corneliss, Irish S. Ainsworth, Emile A. Gruppe, Adolph Newman, Michael Schofield, Richard H. Lever, Raphael Soyer, Ferdinand J. Wagh, Frederick Mortimer Lamb and Tore Aspund (WPA) and in the “manner” of Frederick Merritt Chase. Contemporary paintings include Robert Kenneth White, Lindsay Dawson, Graeme Stevenson, Mahmoud Sabzi, Lynne Friedman, Pennelope Jones and Sasha Bassari. Art pochoirs, prints and etchings by Leroy Neiman, Max Ernst, will cross the block, as will works by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet Pierre Bonnard, Auguste Lauzet, Karel Appel and Helen Frankenthaler.
White’s will again offer a selection of approximately 25 rare early antique telephones, including a wall Phelps switch bell and duplex receiver, rare Thomas Watson Thumper telephone, upright Erie-type candlestick telephones, desk National Bell telephone, potbelly phones, California Electrical Works magneto receivers, unusual decorated Erie-type upright, Grey’s receiver, American Bell switchboard carbon transmitters, Charles Williams Jr and Bell coffin-type telephones, rare butter stamp “for Export” receivers, etc.
Various lots of note include a large, award-winning, Louis XV-style detailed miniature room diorama, a Nigerian Yoruba beaded ceremonial tunic, owl mechanical bank, 85-inch vintage Native American trade figure, Black Forest carved bear hall tree/umbrella stand, Nineteenth Century Sioux moccasins, large Native American basket, Navajo chief rug and geometric rug, Native American battle roach headdresses and cradle board, stained glass windows, fossilized and petrified wood, Nineteenth Century German automaton with A.M. dolls, steins, Oriental porcelains, Sevres porcelain and bronze urn, rare Dunhill aquarium fish table lighter, Paris 18K gold cigarette case, early Japanese woodblock prints, oak card file cabinet, Nineteenth Century French gilt bronze candelabras, early French copper cookware, stoneware crocks, Oriental and hooked rugs, contemporary and vintage pocket knives and more.
Also of note is an extensive years-long collection of German porcelain souvenir china from the collection of dealer and collector Ron Rainka of Warren, Mass. Pieces are of various forms from several US states. Rainka was well known and followed by collectors who sought him out at Brimfield Antiques shows over the years.
Auction previews are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, November 14-16, from noon to 5 pm (or by appointment or chance) and Sunday, November 17, 9 to 11 am to start of sale.
