PLAINVILLE, CONN. — A Steinway Model B piano built in 1999 and boasting an exotic Kewazinga Bubinga wood case will hit the auction block in a live sale on Monday, December 9, at Winter Associates. Examined and tuned by a piano technician once it arrived at the auction gallery, it is ready for years of musical enjoyment for its next owner.
From the same Avon, Conn., estate, sterling, glassware and designer clothing and accessories, many still with retail price tags from Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, will cross the block. Names include Chanel, Prada Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Oscar De la Renta, Cynthia Rowley, Loro Piana, Chloe, Hermes, etc., ranging from size 4 to size 14, along with four full-length fur coats. Highlights include an alligator bag from Saks Fifth Avenue, a Louis Vuitton Petit Nano bag, a Chanel three-piece skirt suit from the spring 2001 collection, a Cythina Rowley Y2K suede toggle coat, a Christian Dior costume jewelry suite and many others. The estate’s jewelry includes a Rado Jubile wristwatch with 660 diamonds totaling 3.3 carats, an 18K and diamond Baume & Mercier Classima ladies wristwatch, diamond pendant, necklaces, earrings and rings. The proceeds from the sale of these items will be given to charity.
Three large sterling flatware sets for the discerning buyer include Tiffany & Co’s Hampton in a wooden case (most pieces still in their original packaging), James Robinson Queen Anne pattern along with another version by Steiff for Colonial Williamsburg. Other patterns include William Bogart Mask, Gorham English Gadroon as well as a Royal Danish five-piece sterling tea set and Mexican six-piece tea set with sterling tray are to be offered along with many pieces of early American silver.
Items from other Connecticut collectors include an 1855 R. Wilson & Son terrestrial globe on stand, samplers, ship and whale weathervanes, vintage signage, an early chest and boxes with ornate carvings, a wallpaper box and more. Also, an assortment of American prints by Stow Wengenroth (8), John Taylor Arms (6), Yngve Soderberg (4), Bernard Karfiol, Thomas Nason (5), Kerr Eby and Luigi Lucioni will be offered.
Continental offerings include a striking and realistically rendered three-quarter portrait of a young woman by French painter Auguste Toulmouche (1829-1890). The young woman is slightly turned away from the viewer, caught admiring a new jewel. Painted by the artist at the latter part of the Nineteenth Century, the work is an example of the artist’s devotion to “richly clad women set against the backdrop of luxurious interiors” and particularly the exquisite execution of folds of satin and velvet, as seen in the portrait’s lustered and voluminous cornflower blue skirt. Fifty-four miniature portraits, many featuring Continental subjects, complement the many objets d’art in the sale, including Viennese and Russian enamels.
Winter Associates’ auction catalog is available on their website as of Wednesday, November 27. Previews are Friday, December 6, from noon to 4 pm; Sunday, December 8, from 2–4 pm; and Monday, December 9, from noon to 5 pm. Previewers are welcome at other times by appointment.
