It was the War of 1812 that first established the American eagle as the iconic symbol of the United States, embellished on insignia, drums, flags of the military and cropping up in popular, patriotic prints, broadsides and paintings of the period. The engraved silver plate worn by Captain Zachariah Rossell of the 15th US Infantry was made by an unknown New York silversmith, while the pewter plate issued to enlisted men of the 16th was designed by Moritz Furst of the US Mint and produced by William Armitage of Philadelphia. Both feature early interpretations of the Federal eagle. The 15th and 16th US Infantry Regiments served together during the 1813 capture of York (present-day Toronto), then capital of Upper Canada.
