GENESEO, N.Y. — Cottone Auctions will present a two-day fine art, antiques and clock auction on Thursday and Friday, November 21 and 22, beginning promptly at noon Eastern time each day. The auction features a broad selection of Modern art, Steuben glass, Tiffany lamps, paintings, decorative items, Asian art, jewelry, sterling silver, rugs, coins, automobiles, clocks, Native American artifacts and more from various estates and private collections.
Day one of the auction will open with Modern art highlights, including 72 cyanotypes by Paul Klee (German, 1879-1940) ($40/60,000); an Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976) silver and steel wire brooch ($20/40,000); four pieces from Donald Judd’s “Earth Green Vertical” series (1991) ($15/25,000); and an Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) “Flowers” lithograph ($15/25,000). Additional works include pieces by Patrick Heron, Tom Wesselmann, Boaz Vaadia, Wolf Kahn, Dale Chihuly and Robert Indiana, among others.
Featured Lamps include a rare Tiffany Studios irregular border Dogwood floor lamp from a California estate ($60/80,000). Two other Tiffany lamps from a Buffalo, N.Y., collection are a Tiffany Studios Dragonfly table lamp ($30/50,000) and a Tiffany Studios Curtain Border hanging fixture ($15/25,000). The Tiffany collection also includes candlesticks, art glass vases, desk accessories and more. Additionally, a rare Emile Gallé (French, 1846-1904) Anemone vase ($5/8,000) and an Italian Renaissance lamp by Duffner & Kimberly ($50/80,000) will be offered, along with lamps by Handel, Unique, Wilkinson and others.
The Steuben collection of Dr Barbara Iglewski from Canandaigua, N.Y., includes more than 200 pieces of Steuben glass, such as Aurene, millefiori and acid-etched items. Highlights include a Steuben Tyrian decorated vase ($2/4,000); a rare green Steuben Aurene decorated vase ($2/4,000); and another Steuben green Aurene decorated vase ($2/4,000).
Furniture includes a rare Charles Rohlfs (American, 1853-1936) oak hall chair ($30/50,000) and a Rohlfs bench ($2/4,000). From a Pennsylvania estate comes an American Neo-Grec bedroom set attributed to Gustave Herter (1830-1898). This inlaid walnut and ebonized set, featuring carved angels and French-painted porcelain plaques, includes a queen-size bed and dresser ($15/25,000).
Paintings include five Antoine Blanchard (French, 1910-1988) street scenes and seven harbor and winter scenes by Emile A. Gruppe (American, 1896-1978). Works by Herman Ottomar Herzog, Édouard Leon Cortès, Colin Campbell Cooper, Carl W. Peters, Milton W. Holm and others will also be available.
Day two begins with a 1931 Ford Model A roadster ($8/12,000), one of five classic cars up for auction. The Native American collection includes a rare Northwest Coast carved clock ($8/12,000), baskets, pottery and corn husk bags, many of which come from the estate of Charles E. Balbach, Orchard Park, N.Y. Other Americana offerings include an unusual William Aiken Walker (American, 1838-1921) “Cotton Pickers” triptych ($10/15,000); a rare American embroidered quilt by Ellen Wells ($3/5,000); and various stoneware pieces, Liverpool pitchers, miniatures, furniture, weathervanes and paintings.
Other highlights include a Wurlitzer military band organ ($5/8,000); and an Orchestral Regina upright music box ($3/5,000).
The Collection of William (Bill) DeVore, North Carolina features around 100 clocks, including two rare examples by Eugene Farcot (French, 1830-1896) conical pendulum mystery clock ($7/10,000) and a rare torsion pendulum mystery clock, Auguste Moreau ($4/6,000). A rare Ithaca floor calendar clock, Cornell model, ($5/8,000), bracket clocks, Ithaca wall and skeleton clocks, mantel clocks, crystal regulator, Seth Thomas and E. Howards will also be featured.
The sale concludes with sterling silver, coins and thousands of buttons from the collection of the “Button Lady,” Dr Simone Brenner, Delray Beach, Fla., all neatly organized and sewn onto a variety of handbags.
