WHIPPLE, OHIO — Meander Auctions announced the sale of the textile collection of Dr Virginia Gunn of Wooster in the firm’s saleroom on January 18. The live auction will include quilts, coverlets, other textiles and early photographs depicting clothing and other textiles. The auction will also include additions from other collectors and estates from around Ohio and the United States.
This will be part two of the monumental collection amassed by Gunn over the past 50 years (part one sold in September with strong results). Quilts and coverlets from around Ohio form the basis of her collection, of which approximately 200 lots will be offered.
Bidders may bid live, in-person, as well as absentee, by phone or live online on Meander Auctions’ website, LiveAuctioneers or HiBid. Items and descriptions can be viewed using the online catalog, and in-person preview is available Monday, January 13, through Friday, January 17, from 10 am-4 pm daily.
Gunn is a nationally renowned expert on quilts and coverlets of Nineteenth Century America, with an especially deep knowledge of Ohio-made textiles. She was inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame in 2017, and during her long career she served on a number of museum and organizational boards, including the American Quilt Study Group and the Wayne County Historical Society. She presented dozens of papers, authored numerous articles and contributed to several books on historic textiles, and was a regular lecturer at the annual American Quilt Study Group Seminar and “Coverlet College” conducted by the National Museum of the American Coverlet. Additionally, “In her position as a faculty member at University of Akron, Virginia Gunn has worked successfully at encouraging a younger generation to explore and pursue the field of quilt and textile history.”
Auctioneer Andrew Richmond said he is excited to bring these items to auction: “While I’ve only crossed paths with Dr Gunn a couple of times in my 20-year career as an auctioneer, her name, work and legacy are very well-known to me. There are few scholars as passionate about textiles as she is, and her collection most definitely reflects that passion.”
Some of the offerings include a mid Nineteenth Century coverlet with a building and US flag border ($100/200), a Clark County, Ill., coverlet ($100/200), many signed and dated Ohio coverlets, as well as pieced, appliqué, crazy and Amish quilts, among them a bold princess feather applique quilt ($200/400) and a diminutive crazy quilt with both embroidered and hand-painted designs ($200/400).
In addition to the Gunn collection, Meander will have approximately 300 lots of Americana, European antiques and Native American material culture. Among the highlights is a pair of profile portraits by Ohio artist Frances Salas ($2/4,000), a stoneware jar with incised owl ($200/400), a painting of McSorley’s Ale House in New York by Ohio artist Clyde Singer ($1/2,000), and a view of Melrose Plantation by Louisiana artist Alberta Kinsey ($1,5/2,500).
