One of the stars of this auction is the documented Mamie Eisenhower wedding reception gown worn to her son John Eisenhower’s wedding on June 10, 1947. The gown was donated by the former first lady herself in 1960 to the Valentine Museum and comes with a photo of the. Eisenhowers standing next to the happy couple.
Also featured in this sale is a collection of evening gowns and coats originally from the Geoffrey Beene Archive and an extensive collection of Issey Miyake owned by the family of an important textile artist. Other pieces of note include a Fortuny sky blue Delphos gown, a 1770s Spitalfields robe à l’anglaise and petticoat and a folio of printed textile samples from the collection of Mary Anne Beinecke, 1775-1845.
In the market for some new vintage duds? There’s a plethora of vintage couture and ready-to-wear confections by Galanos, Bill Blass, Valentino, Balmain, Givenchy, Yohji Yamamoto, Norman Norell, Thierry Mugler, Missoni, Oscar de la Renta, Biba, Adrian and Paquin.
This auction marks the end of a massive collection of costumes deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum that span the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. Augusta Auctions remains the source for exceptional lots of 1920s and 1930s evening dresses and outerwear, early Twentieth Century walking, tea and evening ensembles, mid to late Nineteenth Century gowns, accessories, menswear and more. This catalog also includes four riding habits as well as a robust selection of menswear, including an English Quaker man’s wool suit, 1800-1820.
Finally, Augusta will offer the first of many lots from a large deaccession by the International Quilt Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This collection features numerous Amish Quilts as well as a range of fine quilts from the Eighteenth to early Twentieth Centuries.
