Neil Leifer has achieved global recognition as one of the world’s foremost sports photographers. On December 2 & 3, Guernsey’s will present Mr. Leifer’s personal collection of his own vintage photographic prints plus a broad array of noteworthy prints he has received over his lifetime from other highly regarded photographers. The 700-lot event (of which 96% will be sold without minimum reserve) will be live at NYC’s Bohemian National Hall and available to absentee bidders on liveauctionneers.com and
invaluable.com.
Perhaps best known for his iconic images of the late Muhammad Ali, two hundred of Neil’s photos have graced the cover of Sports Illustrated. From the legendary Giants / Colts 1958 overtime classic to Secretariat capturing the Derby, Leifer photos covering the world of sport are nothing short of riveting. Indeed, half of this event will consist of his older prints signed by Neil and, in many cases, by Ali or the other iconic sports figures depicted. Although an auction of Neil Leifer’s work would, by itself, make for an important sale, the significance of this event is multiplied when factoring in hundreds of important vintage images taken by approx. ninety other highly regarded 20th century photographers who Neil befriended. A sampling: Margaret Bourke-White, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Steve McCurry, Carl Mydans, Gordon Parks, Hy Peskin and Annie Leibovitz.
