We are excited to offer a rare 17th c English Joseph Knibb tallcase clock at our December 9, Round Hill Road, Greenwich, CT estate sale. The clock was purchased by the owner’s family over 80 years ago from the Wethersfield Clock Collection when it was offered by Vernay; the signed Vernay label is inside the cabinet door. The case is ebony in an architectural style. The brass dial is 8” square; the overall height is 6’3”. The face and case all appear to be original; the works appear complete. The face is signed “Joseph Knibb Oxon fecit”. Since it was crafted by Knibb in Oxford, not London, it would date to before 1670 when Joseph Knibb moved his workroom to London. This clock appears in the Britten book “Old English Clocks”.
The English auction house, Dreweatts & Bloomsbury, sold a nearly identical J. Knibb clock in March, 2014 for 240,000
Pounds Sterling. At that time there were only 4 known Joseph Knibb tallcase Oxford clocks; there are only 100 total surviving tall-case clocks by this important early maker.
Rare and important 17th c English tallcase clock by Joseph Knibb, Oxford – one of only a few still in exis-tence! Other showstoppers are a group of 5 signed watercolors by famed illustrator Arthur Rackham, 4 signed etchings by noted Am printmaker Peter Milton, rare signed antique and vintage books, terrific period furniture & accessories, sporting art, books & outerwear and even a pair of flintlock pistols.
