Dorrance H. Hamilton was not only one of Newport’s most esteemed and generous benefactors, but was the Summer Colony’s leading arbiter of style and taste, as reflected in the exquisite furnishings and appointments of her recently completed mansion, “The Bird House.” All of the furniture is new, most custom-made, with designers Lane Venture, Gustave Stickley, Barlow Tyrie, and Rikki Saunders well represented.
The out-of-doors sculptures, which have  won several awards for their creativity and beauty, will be sold in their natural settings throughout the grounds. (Wear flats, and do not attempt to pet the mountain sheep).
Paintings will be a major component of the auction, with 34 oils and watercolors by the following artists: Anna Richards Brewster, Sydney Burleigh (2), Mary Helen Carlisle, Jasper Cropsey (drawing of Hanging Rock), William Wilson Cowell, Richard Grosvenor (2), Paul E. Harney Jr., George Harvey, Edmund Darch Lewis (4), Francois-Nicholas Martinet, Victoria Mele, Margaret Patterson, and Franklin Watkins.
The house will not be open for inspection, and $20 admittance will be charged each day.
(Proceeds to one of Mrs. Hamilton’s favorite charities, The Boys & Girls Club of Newport County).
This is a sale for the adventurous, and it may be an adventure to get there. Directions: Follow Bellevue Avenue or Thames Street towards Ocean Drive, looking all the time for “Fort Adams” signs, then follow the red auction arrows to the estate.
