COPAKE, N.Y. — Copake Auction will conduct its 29th annual bicycle auction on Saturday, June 26, at 9 am. This year’s sale will be online only. According to Seth Fallon, the gallery was supposed to conduct the sale as tradition last April but it was cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. While unique to this specific auction, the gallery said it is confident with its online sales results. Previews will be by appointment.
This year’s sale features consignments from all over the United States. A highlight will be a collection from actor Anthony LaPaglia, an award-winning actor who starred in the long-running CBS series Without a Trace. He is a best-known Broadway actor Tony award winner for his portrayal in Arthur Miller’s View From the Bridge. In fact, he is the last actor who had the benefit of notes on this play directly from Miller himself. LaPaglia has appeared in more than 70 movies and television series. He currently stars in Netflix’s Bad Blood, a series depicting organized crime in Canada. His distinguished career has allowed him the flexibility to dabble in various collections, including collectible watches (previously auctioned by Christie’s) and now steel modern and vintage road racing bicycles.
The auction will feature 850 lots, including antique and collectible bicycles, posters, memorabilia, bicycle accessories and collectibles.
Rare bicycles will include a rare 1889 Psycho safety tandem. Starley Brothers, St John’s Works, Coventry, England, serial #14 of possibly 100 units manufactured. It is believed to be one of maybe a dozen examples left in the world. Other antique bicycles include high wheels, hard tire safeties, pneumatic safeties, boneshakers, tricycles and more.
Balloon tire era bicycles include a 1939 Westfield Columbia, 1948 Monark Silver King Hextube, circa 1937 Dayton Huffman “Super Streamliner,” circa 1937 Excelsior Schwinn balloon tire bicycle and more.
Road racing bicycles, lightweights and modern bicycles will include a George Longstaff racing trike, a vintage Original Once Team Look bicycle, Alex Zulle KG196TT prototype. It was designed exclusively for Zulle, former Swiss professional racer, who during the 1990s was among the best cyclists in the world, taking second place in the 1995 and 1999 Tour de France. Other brand names include Giovanni Gerbi, Schwinn Paramounts, Cinelli, Massi, BSA, Greg Lemond, Bianchi, Hetchin’s, Freejus and more.
The auction will also feature rare bicycle posters, pinbacks, ribbons, trophies, cyclometers, artwork, ephemera, lamps, bicycle parts and accessories and more. This will be a highly diverse sale featuring rare bicycle-related material. The gallery will also be conducting another bicycle and transportation auction on Saturday, September 25, featuring Tour de France items, racing bicycles, early bicycles, balloon tire examples and more.
