An important collection of paintings from Robert Gwathmey
(1903-1988) a social realist painter recognized for his depictions
of rural life in the American south. Gwathmey is regarded as the
first white American artist to produce dignified representations
of black Americans through painting.
The pieces we are offering were purchased from the Terry
Dintenfass Gallery and have never been offered before. They
were exhibited at the Guild Hall of East Hampton and in 1976 at
The National Academy of Design on loan from the consignor’s
parents.
