IHUDSON, N.Y. — On July 17, Public Sale Auction House will conduct what it describes as possibly its most interesting auction yet. The sale is titled “Weird & Wonderful,” and the items contained within are exactly as such: an eclectic assortment of vintage and antique curiosities.
Included in the auction will be a large assortment of items deaccessioned from a still functioning New York State children’s museum, including an entire dinosaur exhibit ,which was removed by Public Sale and reassembled in its gallery space in Hudson (It will be available for preview between July 10-16.) The exhibit consists of nine dinosaur dioramas, the signage from the exhibit, as well as 13 dinosaur paintings that were originally painted specifically to be displayed in the museum. Also included is a collection of 12 antique Native American baskets, science specimens, rocks, minerals, bones and skulls.
The auction will begin on July 17 with bidding starting at noon. There will be an in-person preview July 10-16 from 10 am to 5 pm.
There are many unique pieces in this auction, like a pair of funhouse mirrors and a carnival high striker strength game. Other highlights include a giant architectural fireplace surround and mantel, which is shaped like a house. A pair of antique Samurai swords are also of significance.
With so many interesting and unusual items, the list could go on and on: a collection of photography will be included as well, including hundreds of press photos and a collection of photo albums. Most notably, a scrapbook full of photographs, ephemera and original artwork for backdrops of the show La Revue Negre, the first performance of Josephine Baker, will be auctioned. Included in the album are photos of Baker by Adolf De Meyer.
This auction also has a selection of advertising signs. There are many porcelain signs, including Shell Oil, Union Ice and a large Mail Pouch thermometer. Also included is a one-of-a-kind Art Deco porcelain sign from New York City with a graphic of a gazelle for “Max Blatt.” There are also Coca-Cola collectibles, a Cavalier 96 machine, a fishtail restaurant sign and a small cooler.
No auction of Public Sale’s would be complete without a selection of Midcentury Modern and industrial antiques like furniture and lighting: Included will be a pair of long, mirrored I.P. Frink lights, an industrial medical cabinet and table and an early nickel-plated floor display showcase. A Danish circular woven chair is a highlight along with other lamps and tables as well.
Public Sale Auction House is at 90 Green Street. The sale will be conducted online only with no in-person bidding available. For information, 518-966-7253 or www.public-sale.com.
