OAKLAND, CALIF. — At Clars’ July 17-18 auction, the firm will offer a painting by French artist Adrien Moreau (1843-1906), “Rehearsal of Richelieu’s Tragedy, ‘Miriam.’” Painted in 1879, the work captures famed Seventeenth Century French Cardinal Richelieu, the clergyman who was instrumental in France’s victory in the Thirty Years War over the Austrian Habsburg Empire. The large-scale painting highlights Moreau’s exceptional ability to render light through the use of color emphasized by the depiction of luscious silk fabrics throughout the painting and embodies the hallmarks of the Nineteenth Century French academic style. Originally brought over from Germany by well-known collector Daniel Powers, the painting was intended to be a highlight of the first gallery in Rochester, N.Y. Ultimately Powers’ collection was left to his family where the painting was auctioned off in a sale at Chickering Hall, N.Y., in 1899. Richelieu will finally be reoffered at auction once again with an estimate of $15/25,000.
There will be an assortment of sterling silver, including a Georg Jensen “Blossom” sterling tea service ($3/5,000) and an Acorn pattern flatware service by the make ($4/6,000). For objects of vertu, there will be a selection of Russian icons, including a cloisonne .84 silver oklad icon ($2/4,000).
There will be three vintage jukeboxes, including a Wurlitzer 1100 coin-operated example ($2/4,000). Also to be offered are vintage porcelain and tin advertising signs, a soda fountain, a barber chair and pole, among other items.
The Asian art department will have several highlights, including a Chinese gilt-silver mechanical celestial sphere ($40/60,000), a Chinese huanghuali side table ($20/30,000) and an attributed to Zhang Daqian (Chinese, 1899-1983) set of six watercolor paintings ($15/25,000).
The jewelry and timepiece department will offer a selection of diamond, colored gemstone and gold jewelry on July 18. This sale features a variety of wardrobe staples at accessible price points, including everyday diamonds such as an emerald-cut diamond band ring ($3,5/4,500). Wearable gemstones are highlighted by a 3.70 carats ruby ring ($1,8/2,200; a pair of golden South Sea pearl and champagne diamond earrings ($1,5/2,500); and a pink sapphire line bracelet ($2,8/3,200).
