CLINTONDALE, N.Y. — From estate fine art, graffiti and industrial art; sculptures; photography; porcelain; Nineteenth Century international posters, movie inserts from the 1940s – 1950s; American train sets; rugs; folk art; to art books and beyond, the items to be sold during Kensington Estate Auctions’ online sale on July 12 are ubiquitous and unique.
The art category includes original works by the Canadian artist Richard Hambleton, “Shadows”; French artist Noe Canjura; Cuban artists Zilia Sanchez and Sergio; the Puerto Rican/ American graffiti artist LA II (Angel Ortiz); America artists Paul Cadmus, David Curtis, Arnold Lobel, Albert Pels, Herman Rose, Edward Staloff, Harry Glaubach and Seth Corbett Jones; and Russian artist Yiriy Tarasov, to name a few.
Rare vintage posters and movie inserts are highlights of the sale. Highlights include the Revue Bimestrielle poster by Johan Prikker 1896; Dutch advertising posters: Reclameorukwerk 1930s and De Koopman Van Venetie from 1930s; 1920s Italian travel tourism poster of Venezia; Garcia sewing machine advertisement 1900s; and the 1930s Australian Sheaf Stout Beer advertisement. Original film insert posters from White Heat, 1949; Dark Passage, 1947; the Paradine, 1956; and The Great Heaney Magician are on offer. Those attracted to James Dean, will be interested in the Rebel Without A Cause original film poster, 1955. This category also includes a collection of signed posters from the illusionist David Blaine, signed and numbered limited-edition serigraph by Aldo Luongo of the 1988 Summer Olympics Basketball and an original four-panel cartoon by Milton Caniff for the comic strip Steve Canyon. Highlighting this category is the 12-issue Art Nouveau magazine L’Image, Paris, 1896-1897.
Collectors of Tiffany, bronze and porcelain will be interested in the Tiffany Studios bronze easel-back picture frame, Tiffany & Company sterling silver set: mirror and hairbrush dating to the early 1900s; a graceful bronze tennis player by C. Carter; an Indonesian bronze Buddhist temple oil lamp and Moorcroft porcelain items.
The auction showcases an array of photography. This category ranges from the artistic photographs of the New Yorkers Jack Dowling, Benjamin Smith and the erotic works of Joel to military-related press photographs. More than 200 photographs expose the pain of war, international political leaders, death and hope. Included in this category are photographs and extensive information on the prominent Biddle family of Philadelphia, publicity photos from NASA and the US Air Force and signed photos of renowned male and female opera divas and ballet stars.
For those fascinated with function, there is a 1950s collection of Gilbert American Flyer model trains with a large number of accessories, a grouping of pre-War Lionel train cars and industrial illustration designs from the design and engineering firm of Cushing & Nevell for General Electric, RCA and industrial tool prototypes.
The auction will also include an art book collection, a WPA artist Eleanor Coen lithograph, signed silkscreen by Will Barnet, antique Chinese carved jade urn/lamp; Chinese Ming porcelain dish, Middle Eastern glazed pottery, Venessa Redgrave signed theater programs, antique burlwood lap desk, folk art carved walking stick with a lion head wrapped by a snake, primitive hobo folk art rocking horse clad with coins, vintage carved folk art sign for Ladies Shoes, a collection of Inuit, American Indian and Southeast Asian items, Bellini Italian silver figural cocktail forks/spoons, a collection of World War II Japanese soldier’s wooden identification tags, Nineteenth Century rum barrel/cask, cast iron architectural element from J.J. Bowes & Bros of New York 1890, and, for longevity a single large grouping of fossils and ammonites and more.
