PROVINCETOWN, MASS. — James R. Bakker Antiques will conduct its summer live online fine arts auction on Saturday, August 28, starting at 1 pm. This auction features artworks from the estate of Christopher Busa, Ciro Cozzi and several prominent Provincetown and Cape Cod collectors. Leading the sale from the Busa estate is an ink drawing by Robert Motherwell ($10/15,000), a charcoal drawing by Kathe Kollwitz ($10/15,000) and two prints by Kollwitz, one with the bill of sale to Christopher’s father, artist Peter Busa.
Other masterworks from the Provincetown Art Colony offered to the highest bidders include “Provincetown #1,” a 1991 oil on paper by Lawrence Ferlinghetti ($2/3,000), an oil portrait and two drawings by Henry Hensche, who founded the Cape Cod School of Art after Charles Hawthorne’s untimely death in 1930. A selection of works on the block by Gerrit Beneker includes an early self-portrait of the artist at the easel, a “mudhead” ($2/3,000) from his study with Charles Hawthorne and two watercolors. Works by Arthur Cohen, Harvey Dodd, John Hare, Gerrit Hondius, Budd Hopkins, Angelo Ippolito, Charles Kaeselau, Tod Lindenmuth, Ross Moffett, George Morrison, Ray Nolin, Peter Watts, Sol Wilson, Taro Yamamoto and George Yater will be offered, as well as a selection of works by contemporary Provincetown painters, including Paul Bowen, Salvatore Del Deo, Chet Jones and Christopher Sousa. “Gloucester Fishing Boats,” an oil by Camillo Adriani ($2/3,000) represents the Cape Ann Art Colony.
The selection of works by women artists includes a sketch done in Provincetown by Elaine de Kooning and a rare Provincetown street scene by Edith Lake Wilkinson ($4/6,000), the artist featured in an HBO documentary, Packed in a Trunk. Paintings and watercolors by other women artists associated with the Provincetown Art Colony include Lucy L’Engle, Simie Maryles, Anne Packard, Ada Rayner, Helen Sawyer, Carol Westcott and her sister, Nancy Whorf. A California oil landscape of Chualar by Terry DeLapp ($4/6,000) should attract bidders from the West Coast
A lot of five etchings attributed to Charles Hawthorne, the 1988 Long Point Gallery print portfolio that includes prints by Robert Motherwell and Paul Resika, a color woodblock print of “Main Street, Nantucket” by Margaret Patterson ($4/6,000) and other prints by Blanche Lazzell and Ferol Warthen are just a few of the print highlights.
