STERLING, MASS. — “Portrait of William Patten, Banker,” 1796-1823, attributed to Gilbert Stuart, will be sold at auction on September 21 by Sterling Auctions.
William Patten was born in Westford, Mass. He became a banker. On his death, his brother James, who moved to Sterling in 1816, inherited his portrait. This information was related to the auctioneer John Powers in 1972 by Charlotte Patten-Gildutis, who passed away recently at age 103. She said the portrait has been passed down in the family since 1825 with the understanding that it was painted by Gilbert Stuart. The Pattens have been a prominent family in Sterling with several streets named for them.
