NEW BRAUNFELS, TEXAS — iGavel Auctions’ online sale of rare books and incunabula is now open for bidding through October 12.
“We are delighted to present another important sale of rare books and incunabula, from extremely rare Fifteenth Century texts to Twentieth Century literature,” said Lark Mason Jr. “There is a wide range of material for bibliophiles who cherish the history of the written word.”
The topics are varied and include religious and historic texts. Among them are eight incunabula, or books printed prior to 1500, including Athanasius. Illustrium Virorum Opuscula, Paris, 1500 ($4/6,000) and Scotus, Duns. Quaestiones in Quattuor Libros Sententiarum, 1476-1477 ($2/4,000). These are some of the first books ever to be printed on a press that used moveable type. Prior to this, the block printing method was used.
From the Sixteenth Century are The New Testament of Jesus Christ, translated faithfully into English, Rheims, by John Fogny, 1582 ($3/5,000) and The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, newly printed, with diverse additions, 1561 ($1,5/2,500).
The Nineteenth Century is represented by a handful of iconic texts, including a first edition of The Vampyre, A Tale of Paris, by John Polidori, 1819 ($1/2,000) and Mark Twain’s beloved The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, 1877, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, 1885 ($2/3,000).
Along with an array of books on religion and exploration, Twentieth Century writers such as John Steinbeck, H.G. Wells and Thornton Wilder round out the sale.
All the books are on view at Lark Mason Associates, 210 West Mill Street. The exhibition is open Tuesday-Saturday 10 am to 4 pm, now through October 12. For more information, www.igavelauctions.com.
